How to create a bug against MEP: Hangs while editing mxv files

CloningPeter wrote on 8/29/2021, 6:01 PM

I'm having a consistent problem editing .mxv files. (I mainly use .mxv, so it could happen on others).

When selecting a point on the timeline, my cursor will change to the double arrow (Timeline) and MEP 2021+ will hang. (Pretty must 0% CPU). I can move the double arrow cursor about, but not much else. If I select 'Close Window' by right clicking the MEP icon on the task bar, then MEP will ask if I want to save the work, clicking yes brings up the Saving... dialog, but just hangs there too. If I 'End Task' from the Task Manager, then the program does terminate, but to add extra joy the project file is now corrupt. (If I don't attempt to save, then the project file will not be corrupt)

Is there a formal way to log a defect or do we get on the forums and whine?

System: Version    10.0.19042 Build 19042, Intel i5-6400 CPU @ 2.70GHz, 2712 Mhz, 4 Core(s), 4 Logical Processor(s). Adapter Type    GeForce GTX 960, NVIDIA compatible

Hi, and welcome to the user to user forums.

First, a bug has to be able to be replicated by more than one user and I for one have never had this problem. The warning you are getting is that the program is running out of space on the C: drive to place the temp files that are produced while proxy rendering, although that warning can also be produced when the system does not have enough physical memory. The resolution and frame rate as well as the wrapper containing the codec can all play a part in the amount needed. The amount of ram on the nvidia card can also play a part and often exceeds 3GB when creating mxv files on my system when using 4K files.

Also are your projects saved to the C: drive?

Please add the additional data for the file type and free disk space as well as amount of physical ram please. Use MediaInfo to get the required data using the text view to post back here.

Ray.

Hi

Like @CubeAce I cannot replicate this issue - I suspect that there is an issue with MEP 2021 attempting to be use the GTX 960 for hardware acceleration.

Check the following settings:

  1. Windows Graphics settings for Movie Edit Pro (Videodeluxe) are set as shown below

  2. The Program settings, Display options are set as shown below - substitute HD 530 for my UHD 630 then test again.

RE: The warning you are getting..

I'm not getting a warning - just a hang. I've gobs of SSD space (917GB on C and 400GB on T, which is the drive with the project). I've 12GB of RAM, but I've plenty of free RAM when running MEP. (I was going to add more RAM, but realized that I wasn't getting close to running out)

@johnebaker

I didn't have any Windows Graphic settings, so I've added MEP in. As for the Display Options, that was set to 'Compatibility Mode', so I've changed that. I'll see how that goes.

On a related note, if I don't use 'Video and Audio on separate tracks' it appears to be OK. I've not had a chance to use MEP enough in the last few days though to see if this is a fix or just good luck.

Thank you both for the suggestions. I'll let you know how it goes.

Cheers!

Hi.

The image you show with the yellow triangle in it is the one I am referring to and I frequently find my projects that are on average less than 15 minutes long use more than 16GB of ram. The ram usage will never top out as the program will start to use disk space instead and that sometimes causes crashes. Another cause can be setting up too much virtual ram if you try to set up your own amount instead of letting windows set it.

That is just taken from my current project. I suppose it depends on the type or complexity of a project as ram usage varies and can be as low for me as 7GB but rarely lower.

Note on this one an additional 3GB of vram from the graphics card is in use as well as the 12GB of normal ram on a 7 minute project.

You didn't say what resolution footage you were editing. the i5-6400 can only handle resolutions up to 3840x2160
