How to draw onto video?

themodeller wrote on 12/1/2014, 4:35 PM

Hi,

I create instructional video for sports and just like you see on TV, I'd like to be able to draw onto the video as I do a voice over, or put the drawing in after it has been referenced in the film.

So imagine someone moving on film and then a commentary that says, "his foot should have gone left" and then a line with an arrow appears to show you.

I have a Wacom Digital pen.

Can I do this?

Help very much valued.

themodeller,

A static arrow etc is easy. You create your drawing in any art program or find some clip art on the web -- this arrow was done in Windows Paint, :

Next place it under (higher number track) your video where it is to appear and adjust its playtime. You could also use a fade in / out if you want.

Next set the image effect to 'Video effects' >> 'Chroma key' to make the background color transparent and adjust size and position as necessary:

For movement you have two choices -- either add  key frames to your size and position effects, or use a drawing program that can create and export a short animation to use instead of a static .jpeg image. Also check for animated arrows on the web.

Hope this gets you started.

Regards,

Carl

Added: I just noticed my screen shot didn't include 'White Box' on the image header to show that it has a chroma key effect applied.

Hi Guy,

Short answer - no.

You need to use a pre-made object, insert it, and resize and position it. If you have a drawing program, you can make these up yourself, just save as a png with transparent background. Also, you should have some under Effects, Design elements, Image objects, Present, depending on which version of MEP that you have.

Depending on what you have linked to MEP as an editor, select an object, place the playback marker, right click, Video effects, Create overlay graphics/animation, and an editor might open with which you can create an drawing overtop of the image. When you close the program, it gets inserted on a track below the one that you opened. I think that this only works with Xara. With it, you can send back a static drawing or an animated one.

Here is one that I just did to demonstrate. The red disc and text was done by me in Xara.

Hi Guy,

As Carl and John have said, there are quite a few pointers/arrows built-in to MEP (although these vary by version, which you haven't specified. In recent versions they're found here:

Or for better quality: https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/4019461/MEP-ArrowsPresent.jpg

I've placed some of them plus my supplements in a n easily accessible folder:

I assume you know how to use the Title Editor to add caption text like the example you gave.

Hi

You do not need any additional tools or programs to animate an overlaid image object like the arrow carl created or the ones Terry has described.

Just right click the overlay image object (arrow) and choose "attach to picture position in video" and follow the instuctions in the prompts. MEP cleverly tracks the persons movements in the video and creates Keyframes for the persons position changes. The KF's position parameters can be retroactively edited in Size/Position if you want to track away from the person.

But not enough to give your helpers any feedback in the subsequent four months?
