how to save the files as a package

Hi there, I'm working on a video for my trip. I need some help here, hope any of you can give some assistance. I save my video files on external hard drive, and , and what happened was during the rendering of the video the usb connection disconnected and reconnected again as a result my final video shows black screen with some minutes when the disconnection happened, I guess the video is quite long, about 30 min, therefore the usb connection becomes unstable. Is there a way on movie magic where all video files or music tied to my project can be saved as a package? so I don't need to search through my entire folder to find which videos used on my project to be saved on the local drive. I would great appreciate your assistance. Thanks.

Hi, welcome to the Magix forums.

I have to say, as someone who always uses an external USB3 HDD to store video files whilst working on a project I have never suffered the problem you are seeing of a disconnection. You ask whether it could be because of the length of the video, 30 minutes, but I regularly export projects of 2 hours and more without loss of continuity. If your USB connection does, indeed, become "unstable", I think you need to check carefully the condition of the USB ports you use, the connecting cable and the drive itself; it is not unknown for drives of all kinds to develop faults which can lead to complete breakdown (and loss of data if it is not backed up somewhere else).

So, the answer to your question is that you can create a "project folder" on your internal hard drive and import/copy to that the video files, pictures, music etc., etc. you are going to use in your project. By "copying" the files to that folder you will also ensure that, should a disaster happen to your internal hard drive, the video files are still available on your external drive. Programs can be reinstalled; data (video) files are often irreplaceable.

Hi

. . . . therefore the usb connection becomes unstable . . . .

Try the following - check the Windows Power Management settings for the USB hubs, they may be being turned off by Windows if there is limited activity for a while and when are accessed again can take several seconds to come back online which can cause issues.

To do this you will need to open the Device manager control panel see image below - right click My Computer on the Windows desktop and select Manage then open the numbered sections 1 and 2 shown in the image below.

Right click each of the USB hubs, those indicated in the blue circles are my laptop, you may have more or less, and uncheck the power management option shown at 3 in the image below.

Note if you are running a laptop on battery then this will shorten your battery run time if the USB hard drives are powered from the laptop.

Personally I would work direct from USB drives - they are considerably slower than an internal hard drive - up to* 300 MB/s for USB 3 compared with 600MB/s for a SATA 3 hard drive .

* Despite the USB 3 being rated at 600 MB/s this cannot be achieved in reality and the more usb devices connect to the same USB hub this figure will be lower - the data rate is shared between all devices on a USB hub.
