How to use masking, scaling, effects and transitions for VHS quality

johny_lovin_it wrote on 3/6/2021, 3:57 PM

I hired a freelancer to make me an intro and I'd like to learn on my own how to do these kinds of effects because I'll be doing different intros with different games I'll be playing. I'd just like someone to show me how to do these effects like this video. I have the static, the sounds and the clips. But I struggle understanding the tools and how to use them. I want to learn how to do those transitions with what happened to the gamecube, the sonic figure, the pacman light, the monitor and me holding the game box in my hand with the static and transitioning to other stuff like the book case shelf. Can someone show me through a video so I can understand? Also, how do you capture a still image of the video?

Hi Johnny.

As someone else said to one of your earlier requests for help, 'Little steps'.

Most of what I see in that video is fairly basic editing for Movie Edit Pro and can be done with the internal effects already offered within MEP but there are at least five different effects in use within that video. There are plenty of tutorials from John EB and others here within the tutorials section above. You need to learn the program bit by bit to find out what can be done and the understanding of the use of the Key Frame Editor and its role when applying multiple effects. It doesn't take a lot of effort to look at what is happening in each section of that video and to break it down but it takes time and effort. Take the pack-man face. What does it do? basically it enlarges. So what effect can do that for you? How is the word Fiver repeated and continues to move slightly? How is it showing over the top like that? Does track order have an impact on what can be done?

All of those things are covered as individual topics in the Tutorials section. All you have to do is decide which bit to learn first. I would start by looking through John EB's Tutorials on basic editing.

Editing is and should be a continuous learning and experimental experience that never really ends. The more you learn the easier it will get.

Ray.

Also, how do you capture a still image of the video?

In timeline view, put the Play marker on the frame you want to export as a still image and then:

File>Export Movie>Single Frame as BMP or JPEG.

All my forum comments are based on or refer to my System 1.

My struggle is over! I built my (now) system 2 in 2011 when DV was king and MPEG 2 was just coming onto the scene and I needed a more powerful system to cope. Since then we've advanced to MP4 and to bigger and bigger resolutions. I was really suffering, not so much in editing (with proxies) but in encoding, which just took ages. A video, with Neat Video noise reduction applied, would encode at 12% of film speed. My new system 1 does the same job at 160% of film speed. Marvellous. I'm keeping my old system as a capture station for analogue video tapes and DV.
