Huge file length difference

Running VPX 15.0.5.211. I have been asked by a paying client to "revise and re-edit" the content of a DVD of her family, so no copyright problems. The actual DVD was clearly created by means of the type of recorder which simply played the original VHS tape and burned it directly to DVD.

Extracting the .VOB files to my computer is no problem but VPX is "experiencing problems" when attempting to play these files. DVD Decrypter reports there is no encryption in use so I don't think that is the cause.

Essentially, taking one .VOB as an example, MediaInfo reports that file as follows. Notice especially its time length, 6 minutes 21 seconds.

However, when only that file is opened on the VPX timeline it is now nearly 1 hour 12 minutes!

Choosing to import it to the VPX timeline immediately triggers creation of a new frame table (since VOB is basically mpg, so such a step is expected).

Also, on playback, it seems that VPX is "adding" black frames, typically a group of 3 or 4 every second or so, thus disrupting viewing; I also opened the file in MEP Premium 17.0.2.166, with exactly the same results. Viewing the same file in Cyberlink PowerDVD 17 Ultimate, no black frames!

I would be very grateful for ANY advice on this. Clearly, because this is a client's file I am not at liberty to post it anywhere for others to test, unfortunately.

Hi Jeff

That VOB has an impossibilty - the Video bit rate at 21.8 Mb/s is greater than the Maximum bit rate of 1 184 kb/s (1.184 Mb/s).

The width at 352 px means the video is a Half Horizontal Resolution (Half D1) format to save on disc space.

I have no issues importing VOBs with a custom matrix, Video bitrates lower than the Maximum bitrate, MediaInfo does report the bitrates correctly, and variable GOPs, however all the ones I have are not Half D1 format.

Playing the DVD / VOBs through a media player will play it correctly - they are within the DVD standard, except for that video bitrate.

Have you tried running the VOBs through MovAvi to correct the issues?

Thanks for your reply. Yes, there is something really "weird" about that VOB! Indeed, the whole disc has a number of strange anomalies. It is a 4.7GB DVD+R. Windows Explorer lists the contents of the Video_TS folder as:

All those on a 4.7GB disc?? (Now I know why I really hate those VHS>DVD Disc "automatic" burners.)

Thanks for the suggestion re MovAvi; I will experiment later today. Any suggestions as to which "format" to convert to?

Assuming the final destination is DVD then I would suggest a minimally compressed format - the source is already highly compressed and, as it has come from a VHS recorder, the need to preserve as much quality as possible is necessary.
