Imported images dimensions are not refreshed when changing picture externally.

erkki.salonen wrote on 7/19/2014, 3:53 AM

Hi.

I am using Magix Movie Edit Pro Plus 2014 version 13.0.5.4 UDC2.

My workflow is following;

1. I edit video still graphics with Corel Draw X6 and export pages as png images.

2. I import pictures to Movie Edit and add them to timeline.

--> This works ok.

Now if I change picture dimension (logo for example) from 200 x 100  -> 200 x 200  and export page to png file with same name I would expect that:

1. Magix will detect changed picture and refresh images on timeline.

Now what is happening is:

Image change is not detected.

This can be workaround by choosing from menu edit/empty undo and cache memory. However this trick does not work when image dimensions are changed. --> Video effects (size, section..) does not work and image is shown incorrectly on exported movie (mp4).

The problem above can be workarounded by closing Movie Edit and restarting it again.

The expected behavior would be:

Once image is changed, it i refreshed properly.

The files (png and the project itself) locates on local harddisk.

I have been using Movie Edit Pro only short time. So far this seems to be hickup encountered.  If you need more info, I am glad to help.

Hi Erkki,

It's an obscure but annoying bug that's still not been fixed. I first reported it nearly two years ago in this post:

http://www.magix.info/uk/mep-17-mx-2013-sizing-display-bug.forum.883613.html

It's arisen in various forms since then, such as here:

http://www.magix.info/uk/mep-2013-and-other-false-memory-bug-remains.forum.1041384.html

A couple of other users have tested and confirmed I recall, but I don't think anyone else other than me is particularly troubled by it. In my case I often edit images externally in IrfanView or PaintShop Pro while I'm editing, and this bug is frustrating when it crops up!

--------------------

Just seen John's reply which he must have sent while I was composing mine! Food for further thought/discussion. But, perhaps naively, I take the simple view that an NLE should use the current version of its source material, period.

Hi

. . . . Magix will detect changed picture and refresh images on timeline. . . Now what is happening is:. . . Image change is not detected.

That is correct - unless you have an image editor which supports MX and works with MEP (see below) then this is a multi step process- the software has created a cached copy of the object and uses a reference to the real object which is used when you render the video or create a disc.

. . . . However this trick does not work when image dimensions are changed. --> Video effects (size, section..) does not work and image is shown incorrectly on exported movie (mp4). . . .

Correct - the dimensions are stored in the software database and are applied to the object they have been added to. When you change the object externally, the stored settings are not changed and will be applied to the externally altered object after it has been refreshed on the timeline.

If you right click the image object and select Edit in Xtreme Photodesigner then when you make the changes, save them and close Photodesigner you will find that MEP automatically updates the timeline - you will still have to change size position etc where necessary.

If Corel Draw supports Media eXchange (MX) then it may work with MEP - you need to change the default image editor in the programs settings - make a note of the current setting before you do this, to reset to the original if it des not work.

Hi Terry

I do not think it is is a bug I queried Magix several years ago about using Paintshop Pro as the default image editor and received the reply re Media eXchange - see answer below -  which IIRC first appeared in MEP MX (MX = Media eXchange). At that time only Photodesigner was the only image editor that did work correctly.

Will have to revisit this to see if PSP X5, which allegedly does support MX, now works.

Cheers

IT WORKS - timeline updated when you save image and close PSP.

@Terry

I know PSP is your favourite editor so if you have not done so upgrade to X5 or later.

@ Erkki

Based on PSP X5 working Draw X5 should also work.

Cheers

John

Hi Terry

I do not think it is is a bug

Hi John,

I suppose I must be describing a different issue, the one I referred to in those links. This is the easily reproducible bug I mean:

Hi Terry

I can reprodiuce that in that I get the initial distortion, however if I deselect the image on the timeline, switch to the Effects tab, select Size and Position, select the image object again and move the timeline cursor or press play the image the preview immediately switches to show the image in it new proportions.

Using PSPS X5 as the default image editor  in the programs settings and editing via right click Edit in external editor, as I described below,  on returning to MEP the image is updated correctly as shown below:

Now that I know PSP X5 works correctly this is going to save me quite a bit of time.

Hi John,

Thanks for confirming this plain bug.

However, I cannot reproduce your 'work-around'.

This is the actual cropped image:

And this is the image that was originally imported and deleted:

As I've suggested before in several posts, it's as if MEP (MX, 2013, 2014 and possibly 17 and earlier) does not remove all connections with previously loaded objects after they have been deleted from the project.

BTW. I  see that the bug I reported when trying to embed images in messages here has still not been fixed. The image does get embedded but you don't know for sure until you've sent it!

Hi.

After checking this once more the only working solution seems to be that.

1. Remove images from timeline

2. clear cache

3. Reimport images.

--> Images are up to date

Downside of this approach is that you need

1. reposition images on timeline

terrypin wrote on 7/21/2014, 2:21 PM

Hi,

Or you can rename the image externally and it will be handled correctly on re importing. Then you can align with the old image before deleting that.

Or save the project with a new name.
