Importing a button into Moviemaker

Charmi wrote on 2/10/2015, 12:24 PM

According to the description of Moviemaker Pro, I can import my own buttons when burning a DVD. I can edit a button using the external editor but cannot see how I then get that button back into the DVD screen. I want the little arrow that takes you to the next level to have text on it that says 'Chapters' or 'Scenes' so people know exactly what that arrow does. Similarly the arrow that takes you back to the Main menu, I would like to have 'Main Menu' on it, a commercial DVD has this and it is not obvious what these arrows are doing. Only one template has the word 'chapters' on it but the text is so light that I can't see it

Hi

Which version of Movie Edit Pro (MEP) are you using?

I am using

MAGIX Movie Edit Pro 2015

If you look on the Magix website on the functions page for the package, it says this

For DVDs and Blu-ray Discs

Add and design extra menu pages
Add buttons you've designed yourself
Include your own text or graphic objects on menu pages

I can't find anywhere that tells me how to add buttons

Charmi wrote on 2/10/2015, 4:23 PM

Also I can't find information on how to include a text object

terrypin wrote on 2/11/2015, 6:24 AM

Hi Charmi,

Here's how to add text.

I have to leave so will cover the button adding this evening if no one else has done so. (Or you haven't figured it out from this example, as it's very similar. Just change the option in step 4 to link to your Chapters menu, for example.)

You didn't say what template you were using. Note that there are many inconsistencies across templates, plus design quirks and a few bugs in the DVD Menu part of MEP. (Unless these have finally been fixed in MEP 2015.). I used the HD Static > 'Default ... 169' menu for my demo above.

Thanks Terrypin, I'll give it a go, I'm not on the computer at the moment, so don't know which template I used, I think it was a beach scene from the animated ones. Your example is just what I want to do, I gave a DVD of our Indian holiday to a friend, just using the basic template, she didn't understand what all the buttons did. I used to use DVD7 and I can't remember having these problems!

Hi Charmi,

As promised, here's how to add a new button. In this example my DVD contains two movies, both with several chapters, but obviously it's even simpler for one movie. I've deleted the original buttons, made a new one in my image editor, and then used the following steps.

Happily that method works fine for the animated beach scene, although you'll see some quirky differences, illustrating the point I made earlier. In this example I left the chapter buttons unchanged and simply added text alongside.

Hi Terrypin

I have fianlly got round to trying out you suggestion, however my package is missing one of the boxes that you have on yours, in fact it looks as if it is missing a few! I can only access this screen if I highlight a button (not a navigation one) and select Edit, I cannot do an independent edit

terrypin wrote on 2/20/2015, 2:03 PM

Hi Charmi,

Not sure I follow what you mean. Please show us a screenshot or two with exact details of the steps you take and the results you get.

For any other user with similar questions who ends up here, I submitted my suggestions as two very simple tutorials 12 days ago and after some chasing they are both up today:

Hi Charmi,

I'm re-posting your comment from the Tutorials section here, as it's best to keep the discussion in one place. And that way others can contribute and learn.

Thanks Terrypin, I can see this better, however in my version of Moviemaker, I do not have the plus and minus sign nor the text that says 'Design button' , I see you have a Premium version mine is just 2015, no bells or whistles but what is frustrating is that the description for my version on the Magix website SAYS you can do what you are demonstrating but the functionality does not seem to be there.

I do appreciate your effort to help

First, to avoid ambiguity, could you please use the correct name of the product, Movie Edit Pro 2015. In your case it's also now clear that you have the basic version so it's worth adding that too.

We've now clearly identified the cause of your problem. The basic version seems to lack the Design Button function.

Having looked at that Magix web page, I think it's misleading. It implies that all versions of 'Movie Edit Pro 2015' have that function.

Did you try a trial version first? Or look at other pages comparing features? Like most of the experienced users here, I'd have recommended at least the Plus version.

If you want to do so now, I'd suggest you email Magix and ask if you can pay the extra to replace the basic by the Plus or Premium version.

I've referred Magix Support to this post.

Hello Terrypin

All points taken on board. The reason I chose Magix was because I had Magix Movies DVD7 on a previous computer with which I had no issues, I cannot remember if I ever needed to add text, I last used it 5 yrs ago! That computer died, so i contacted Magix to see if I could transfer the license, the answer was no as the product was obsolete and they suggested I could have Movie Edit Pro 2015 at a reduced price. At that stage I had no idea that I would need to edit buttons or add text. I had been pleased with DVD7 and saw no reason as to why I would have problems with this product.

terrypin wrote on 2/25/2015, 10:17 AM

Hi Charmi,

You told us at the outset that "I can edit a button using the external editor but cannot see how I then get that button back into the DVD screen." So I assume that you opened Photo Designer, and added the text 'Chapters' or whatever alongside the arrow. In my version of PD, which came with MEP 2014 Premium, I would then simply use File > Save and then confirm by clicking Save in the resultant pop-up:

So I don't think you actually need the Design Button facility.

If you still need help, please attach the screenshots and full details as requested.

Terrypin, your screenshot is what I get, I click on Save and then I have no idea where the edited button goes, certainly not into the DVD layout. I haven't worked out how to put text alongside the button in Photo Designer, I seemed to be able only to incorporate text on the button. I have done a workaround and fiddled the layout of the text for the Heading text and the 'Return to Menu' button. I will do screenshots for you. I am caught up with work at the moment. I do appreciate all your efforts.
