Inserting a clip on the timeline

Pete-Lowland wrote on 8/27/2025, 8:40 AM

Hi,

Maybe I am overlooking an option, but I really tried to find it...

Coming from Pinnacle I could insert an object anywhere in the timeline by just click and drag an object from another place on that timeline. Then the objects on the right will automatically shift to the right to make space for the insert.

So far I could not find how to do that in VDL26+, apart from first making sufficient space on the intended insertion point, then click/drag the insert to that place, then do a close all gaps.

Is there a simpler way to do this?

Kind regards

Peter.

@Pete-Lowland Hi, at the bottom of the preview window are 3 buttons, Single Objects - that doesn't do anything & sounds like that's what your in. Single Track & All Tracks will move the objects on the timeline as you wish

Edit, Sorry just reread your comment, Vegas has a Shuffle option, that shifts the object to the right when another objects is relocated, I don't think Magix has this, you might have to use the Scene overview or Storyboard mode to relocate objects. (buttons at the end of the timeline window)

Hi @Pete-Lowland, The first image @Gid uploaded allows you to move the video clips around the timeline.

That's what the manual says.

Good luck,

@Pete-Lowland You're asking about this I believe?

This is Vegas's Shuffle option, like I say I don't think Magix can do this on the main Timeline, you'd have to go into Scene overview or Storyboard mode.

I'm happy to be corrected if I'm wrong.

Hi

VDL 26 does have a 'shuffle feature for inserting media, it can also split an object before ading the media to the timeline..

To use the feature, which is set to Automatic by default:

  • Turn on the insert action mode see image below, and select the appropriate option - Single track ripple for when no other objects must be moved or Multi track ripple.

  • Position the timeline marker (cursor) to the time where you want the inserted media object to go and drag the media from the Import tab, if you want it to go in between 2 objects position the timeline marker at the junction of the 2 objects.

    If the timeline marker is positioned between the start and end of a media object on the timeline, it will be split and the new media inserted. If there are media objects on lower tracks these may also be split and moved leaving a gap.

An easy way without the faff, put the timeline into storyboard mode (bottom right of the screen).

@Gid

Hi Gid,

The title of the topic, which I was going by, is not the same as the content, so is a little confusing. your comment is correct when moving clips

I responded with how to avoid the issue of the clip ending up in the wrong place when inserting from the media pool.

To 'shuffle' as in Vegas, set the Insert mode, as I previously commented, then use Ctrl+X to remove the selected media from the timeline, reposition the timeline cursor to where the media is to be located and use Ctrl+V to paste the media clip into position.

If the timeline marker is positioned between the start and end of a media object on the timeline, it will be split and the media inserted. If there are media objects on lower tracks these may also be split and moved leaving a gap.

Hi Johnebaker, Gid and Bol,

I am sorry that my header was not clear enough, indeed I intended an insert of an object somewhere within an existing multi-object timeline, automatically shifting all the righthand objects to the right. (Shuffle function?)

Indeed setting the timeline to both storyboard or scene overview accommodate the shuffle function, so that solves my question.

Johnabaker: I tried to follow your process: change to "Single track ripple" and insert an object from the pool into an existing multi-object timeline, but whatever I try, it gives me the attached message. Shifting one object within the same timeline results in the replacement of the target object and no shuffle.

After the "Take" discussion is this the second point where this button shows problems.

Many thanks for the responses and the thinking.

Kind regards,

Peter.

@Pete-Lowland

Hi,

I can see that I need to start redoing my earlier tutorials.

Your second image is actually a series of buttons for importing. When you see a button with 3 dots at the bottom, right-click on it to see all button. You want single-track ripple, shortcut 2.

You do not need to be in mouse mode for single track to do this. Just stay in normal mouse mode.

Make sure to put the playback marker where you want the insert to be before selecting this if a file is selected (highlighted) in the Media Pool/Import tab, or, if you are already in this mode, then place the playback marker, then import from the Media Pool. Everything to the right of the playback marker will be moved to the right and the object inserted at the playback marker.

As with most things, understanding what you are doing and the possible impact of what you are doing is important. For example, if you have objects on other tracks that you want to move with those on the track to which you are importing, then use the appropriate command, like Multitrack ripple. Titles and music come to mind. Note that grouped objects on more than one track will move as a group, even if you use singletrack ripple. And so on.

Hi browj2,

Sorry to disappoint you 😉😉 , but this is certainly not my first Film/Video I make, I am well aware of functional behavior of several other tools.

In the version of VDL26+ I have in front of me there are more than one unpredictable (and undocumented) results. This Take functionality is one of them and this is another.

When you mark the ripple option (2) and try to load an object from the Pool to the timeline, it gives this error message, see the dumps below.

BTW the helptext when you put the mouse on the button is also wrong:

Is it possible for you to test this and/or tell me where I go wrong?

Kind regards

Peter

browj2 wrote on 8/28/2025, 12:59 PM

@Pete-Lowland

Hi Peter,

The problem is that you are using Takes. Takes are mini project files, not objects. The various import modes work for audio, video and image objects, not takes, with the exception of Automatic, which will put your take at the end. Even for drag and drop from the Media Pool, you have to be in Automatic mode - at least I can't import a take in any mode but Automatic.

Hi John,

That's what I found also, with a few test MP4's indeed it works (i.e. inserting in non-automatic mode on the marker from the Pool causing a ripple to the right), but a shuffle on the timeline between the MP4's is not working. I think that is like that by design, so I will put no effort in that anymore, but will use a work-around. Still now and then I have unexpected behavior, (like creating a double space on the timeline), but that is probably because of my current position on the learning curb 😊😊.

Nevertheless, I think it is a pity that this does not work with Takes as I do not want to do an extra conversion into MP4's as that impacts the old video's/films with which I am working too much.

Thanks for the responses and the testing,

Kind regards

Peter.

Hi John,

Yes indeed and that works very well with objects/MP4's, but not for takes...😒😒 as explained above by browj2.

My current work-around for moving takes on the timeline (shuffling) is:

  • Estimate the timeline gap necessary to house the "to be moved" object/take
  • Create a gap in the timeline using "Mouse all tracks"
  • Get back to Mouse single object
  • Select the "to be moved" object/take AND all possibly belonging entries on other tracks
  • Move them to the place where you want them
  • Close all gaps

Not a very efficient process, but it works for me..😊😊

@Pete-Lowland what I have found using different editing software over the years (you might know me as TonyP if you were in the PS user forum) including Pinnacle, is that I just adjust to how the software is programmed and move on. There are some inconveniences as you have mentioned, that are easier to implement with other software, but that is with any software you will use. Pinnacle had Smart, Insert, Overwrite, 3-4 Point, and one I really loved, Replace, for timeline editing modes. I mostly worked in Overwrite moving things where I wanted them since I always used a sound track and didn't have to worry about keeping audio in sync.

Some people change the keyboard shortcuts, I never bother and learn the "new" way.

But how do you like the software so far?

johnebaker wrote on 8/30/2025, 10:36 AM

@Pete-Lowland

Hi

. . . . Not a very efficient process, but it works for me.. . . .

Agreed, an option I have used is to move the object/take to an empty track at the horizontal position where it is to be inserted and use it as the gauge the gap, open the gap using the appropriate Mouse mode, then, ensuring the mouse is in Single Object mode, select and move the object into the gap.

The default 'snap to' feature helps positioning as you can see in the quick demo below.

I do change the keyboard shortcuts for the mouse mode, the default 'feels wrong' to me, so I swapped Single track (8) and Multi track (7) so that 6,7 and 8 become Single object, Single track, Multitrack respectively

And it might take some getting used to. There are some saying that the program is very user friendly, while others might disagree to some extent.

Me? I've used software since the 1990s for video editing. Use a lot of different types of software. Some I like, some not so much. But I learned to edit the way the software edits.

Welcome to the Magix users forums.

First, can you specify exactly which Magix program and version you have, please? See the Help>About menu when the program is open.

Second, assuming the program is either Movie Studio (from version 18 onwards), previously known as Movie Edit Pro, now renamed as Video deLuxe (!), or Video Pro X, please take and post here a screenshot of your workscreen so that we can see exactly what you are seeing!

Third, you do need to be aware that reinstalling the program is often NOT the best thing to do to help resolve problems like yours. Unless you take great care to fully remove all traces of the previous installation there is a very good chance that whatever has created the original problem for you will still be present on your computer.

@Esther-Rodriguez

Hi Ester,

I'm guessing. Are you also missing the timelines? Start Video Deluxe and press "F9."

Als een kwestie onoplosbaar lijkt, komt dat niet omdat je de oplossing niet ziet, maar omdat je het probleem niet ziet.

If an issue seems unsolvable, it is not because you do not see the solution, but because you do not see the problem.

„Wenn ein Problem unlösbar erscheint, liegt es nicht daran, dass man die Lösung nicht sieht, sondern weil man das Problem nicht erkennt.“
