Install problem MEPX12 to new computer

Audrey2 wrote on 8/8/2020, 12:59 AM

Hi , about a month ago I had a computer go down whilst using MEP-X version 16.02 and decided it was time to upgrade
to MEP-X12 and  also replace the computer. Contacted Magix who supplied the necessary info to download the software.
Purchased a new computer thus:-

Dell XPS 15 9500 laptop , Intel i7 10th Generation 2.6ghz , 16gb  Memory , 1TB SSD , NVidia GTX1650 Ti 4gb GDDR6
Windows 10 64bit (home) Version 1909 Build 18363.959

Installed MS Office then downloaded MEP-X12 and proceeded to install. All appeared to go ok until about halfway through
installing Step 1 of 7 when it displayed the following message :-

The following task could not be executed successfully :
    Installation of Microsoft Visual C ++ 2008 SP1 (x64) Redistributable  Cause Exit code 1073807364
    File path: C\Users\j-tel\AppData\Local\Temp\mgxk3uao65H\addon\vcredist2008_SP1_9.0.30729.6161\vcredist_x64.exe

Pressing OK continues with step 2 and another error notice and so on for the 7 steps.
I feel the problem is with loading MS C +++ , have downloaded the program a 2nd time , restarted the computer ,
disabled McAfee but with the same results. Have contacted Dell - who contacted Microsoft -no luck , I am awaiting a reply
 from Magix.  any help appreciated.

@Audrey2

Hi Audrey and welcome to the user forum.

First it is unusual to ever find a Magix staff member answer questions here. It is purely a user to user forum.

If you need to contact Magix directly you will have to email them but I don't think they will find a solution to this problem.

It looks like you are using an old version of Microsoft Office which will cause problems with any other software that is using a graphical interface. It upsets any newer program that needs that, including CAD programs, photo, or video editing programs. Even audio editing programs.

If it were me, depending on how much of Office I needed, I would look for one of the free alternatives on the net or switch to the cloud Office 365 version that is free for the basic version or has a small subscription based fee if you need some of the more advanced features of office. There is of course also the new version of Office which will work with Windows 10.

If you search the net about this error code you will find a lot of enquiries with no solutions to this problem.

Technically this is a Microsoft problem and not a Magix problem, hence I don't think Magix will be of help.

Ray.

Hi

There is some confusion here -

. . . . MEP-X12 . . . . version 16.02 . . . . vcredist2008_SP1_9.0.30729.6161 . . . .

There is no such program as MEP X12 (MEP = Movie Edit Pro), VPX 12 is version 18.0.1.52 and uses a different vcredist redistibutable, - VPX 9, as in your previous installation, used the vcredist 2008.

The error message would suggest you were installing Video Pro X 9, which you had in a prior installation ?

@Audrey2

Also, just for clarification, can we assume you are attempting to install VPX12, and not MEP-X12, which does not exist!

I agree with Ray, this seems to be a problem created by a missing M$ service, perhaps precipitated by the installation of Office.

If this were happening to me, given that the computer is still very new, I think I would be tempted to Restore the computer to its default "factory" settings, then install VPX12 and then, consider carefully what Ray has written about your version of Office and consider updating/upgrading it before attempting its reinstall. If you still receive the error message on reattempting the VPX install, there is clearly some major problem with the Windows installation on your computer, which should be down to Dell to fix, I think.

Hi and thanks for the replies, Ray thanks for the welcome, I have posted a couple of questions over the years & found the help needed.
The version of Office installed was the current version for Windows 10. Windows 10 Vers 1909 Build 18363.959.
John EB , My mistake, I was attempting to install Video_Pro_X12_18.0.01.77 which I presume from the install log file is a trial version.
I also noticed that MS Visual C++  2017 x64 and 2017 x86 were installed by Dell prior to the delivery of the laptop (part of windows 10 ?)
MS Visual C++ 2008 installed at the time of the attempt to install VPX12.
I had contacted Magix re the problem which was acknowledged (abt 14 days ago) and a support ticket # given  but as yet I have not heard back from them. Dell support spent considerable time (remotely) looking at the problem and contacting MS, their consensus was I should contact Magix (which I had already done)
I will resubmit the log file etc to Magix and contact Dell on Monday. Would be interested to hear of any problems using this Dell laptop.
Again Thanks
Audrey2

Hi Audrey.

I think I have found the specs to your laptop here. Can you tell us the additional add-ons or alterations to the spec you opted for please as I notice the base spec also has a smaller C: drive than you have quoted.

Also I noticed they use McAfee antivirus. I'm not sure if that is one of the antivirus programs that can cause instillation problems or not. I'm sure one of the others will chip in at this point if they have additional information but I personally think it is always a good idea to turn off antivirus software during an install.

Hi Ray,

The specs you looked at is basically the device I purchased the differences being a 1Tb SSD , Windows 10 64bit Home not Pro and a 3840 x 2400 touch screen (which is impressive) and yes it does have McAfee Live Safe Protection installed, which I disabled on my second install attempt but still had the same results.

Hi Audrey.

So, as far as I can tell there should be no logical reason that I can see why your machine is not accepting the program. The only conclusion I can come to is Windows has a corruption in it somewhere or Dell has some sort of software running we don't know about.

Personally I either build my own PCs or get them part built to save component costs and then rebuild them. So my solution would be to reload Windows from scratch. Then add all the Windows updates, drivers etc. Then load VPX and then Office. Testing each bit as I went along in case the same thing happened again. Trying to rebuild the current Windows install seldom clears any problems.

It is nothing short of a real pain when this sort of thing happens but if not sorted now properly it could cause further complications in the future.

Alternatively you should be able to send the machine back to Dell for testing.

I know this is probably the last thing you want to hear but unless anyone else has a suggestion, that is what I would do when other people running similar specced machines are able to run the software without the same problems.

The other slight possibility is VPX didn't download properly in which case delete any trace of VPX on the machine and try the download again from your MAGIX account from scratch.

Sorry.

Ray.

Hi Jeff.

Not quite if you mean trying to reset Windows rather than uninstalling it. A roll back may work if the restore point is far enough back but the blue screen repair option in my experience seldom works well. Actually, it has never worked for me.

Hi Ray.

My understanding of the "Reset Windows" option is that this relatively new computer should then be back to all defaults as it was when first purchased. If so, and if there is still a problem, that is something to pursue with Dell, I think?

I'm not advocating using a "Restore Point" since my experience with them, like yours, is that they rarely work.

You can easily run checks on the PC for corruptions and have them fixed (usually).

Open a Command window (CMD.EXE) in administrator mode.

Then issue the command SFC /SCANNOW

It will run for a while and check (and fix) erros.

A second option (that you can try anyway) is to use the DISM command.

Still in administrator mode, in the command window issue the following command(s)

DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /CheckHealth
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /ScanHealth
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth

Use DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /? if you want to check the help for the commands prior to running them.
