Is there a way to increase the cache?

Steve-Jones3743 wrote on 5/5/2025, 6:34 AM

The software is the latest upgrade to Movie Studio. PC specifications are: Stormforce Onyx Ryzen 5 4500 CPU. 32 gb sd4 RAM. Ryzen RX7600 GPU (8gb). The programme is inclined to freeze so I'm guessing it might be the cache. The setting is for TVHD. Any help would be appreciated. I have been using just three photos to learn how to zoom in and out. Much thanks.

Hi and welcome to the user to user forums.

I doubt it's a cache problem but may be down to not enough free space on the C: drive as a lot of space is needed to allow the temp files to be created and written to disk. Those files can be huge and can cause freezing if not enough contiguous space is available.

Another possibility is the quality settings for the monitor within the program. You could try lowering the frames per second or reduce the quality using the lightning symbol.

Ray.

Thank you for the welcome and your reply. The storage drive is a Kingston 1tb M2. NVME. It is not partitioned. The PC also has 2 1TB Samsung 870 QvO SSDs They have a read speed of 560mb per second and write speed of 530mb per second. They are used for storage. @Steve-Jones3743

How big is your project on the timeline? Are we talking about a duration of 3 minutes or 3 hours?

When does the freezing happen? After loading the media onto the timeline and playing the project? After applying effects or colour grading etc?

Does the freezing happen when you manually scrub through the timeline with your mouse?

In your Program settings, how many minutes is set for auto save. The default 10 min or something else?

When the freeze happens, what do you do to resolve the issue. Wait until the system sorts itself out? Save the project? Shut down the program and restart it?

Which edition? Basic, Premium or Suite? The edition ought not to be a factor but might be.

You say you have been using just three photos on the timeline to learn how to zoom in and out. If that is literally all there is in your project (depending, perhaps, on the resolution of those photos) then, IMO, the software should not be freezing.

In addition to the questions which @Can-Dive has asked, can you also tell us, step by step, exactly what you are doing to cause the freeze to occur? Perhaps create a screen recording of it?

Thank you Can-Dive and emmrecs. The intended project is for a video that will feature both video footage and still image footage. It may be an hour to 1.1/2 hours in duration. It is for a wedding video that will be HDTV. As yet just three images are being used to learn what to do. 1 is a gif which is 128kb. That was done in photoshop and will be zoomed both in and out. It's a red hollow heart. 1 jpg is 7.35mb taken with a camera and the other is 6.83 mb. taken with a mobile phone. The footage as yet is less than a minute. It has frozen while trying to zoom in and again while fading from one image to the next. The fade is 5 seconds. The only thing I have been able to do is restart the PC when it freezes. Basic, Premium or Suite? It is the 2025 Suite. I wouldn't know how to do a screen recording of it happening. The images are placed on the same channel and are overlapping to get the fade. The zoom has been various methods and even while trying to remember exactly what I did it has frozen again. Thanks again.

Hi Steve,

Have you reset Video Deluxe to default values? If not go to: file / settings / reset program settings to the default value. What you could also do is to delete the hidden cache folder. After deleting, the cache folder will be automatically recreated.

Good luck,
Rob

@Steve-Jones3743

Thank you for the additional information! Every little helps!

Does the freeze always occur at the "same point", i.e., at a specific time of the attempted zoom? If you temporarily remove the .gif does this effect any change to the problem? (I ask this because I wonder whether the .gif format is causing problems for MMS). If removal does allow the remainder to run properly, I would look to converting it to a more "common" video format, e.g., mp4. (I think the free HandBrake, should be able to do this, or, perhaps, ShutterEncoder.) Or can Photoshop export it to a different format?

Are you able/willing to post your source images and .gif to a file-sharing site (so not attached to a post here) so that others can download them and test them on their computers?

One other (not necessarily helpful, to you) thought: the experience of a number of posters here seems to be that intel CPUs etc. prove rather less troublesome than AMD Ryzen. You can see the spec of my computer in my signature and I would be very annoyed if mine froze when doing what should be a very simple task!

One other (equally potentially unhelpful) thought: my computer was purchased, brand new, at the beginning of December last year. Within less than two months its original 1TB NVMe drive had to be replaced (by the manufacturer) as it was faulty! So don't automatically discount the possibility that your computer might have a hardware fault.

@Steve-Jones3743 Hi, I second what has been said that you shouldn't be having problems but from your description I suspect the gif might be the problem, I have gifs that work & some that don't. If you can export that gif out as a video separately & then reapply it, try that & see if it makes a difference ..?

If your gif has transparency then you'll have to maybe convert it in other software to a more favourable format that MMS likes, a format that supports an alpha channel, at present MMS doesn't export with alpha.

Thanks Bol. I’ve now done that and am yet to try it to see if that has worked.

Thanks emmrecs. File sharing site. I would have to look in to that. Not sure about where. The Ryzen should be good as I have been given to understand. I’m not sure about Kingston with m2 NVMEs.

Thanks Gid. What you have said is particularly interesting. I drew the heart in Photoshop then converted it because I wanted transparency.  I’ll have to try something else I think.

Many thanks.

@Steve-Jones3743 Hi, depending on what the heart is doing a png image of the heart can be imported in MMS & the movement be applied using MMS's tools..

------------

A copy of the gif would be interesting, we can test it as suggested & it might help for future reference -

1. Open Google, top right is a sq of dots - Open Google Drive.
2. Drag that video onto the Google Drive window, let it upload.
3. Right click on the file on screen - Share.
4. A window will pop up, General Access - choose anyone with the link - Copy link.
5. Then on here in a new comment at the top there's a chain button, paste the link on there
6. Click Comment

I have found using PNG, it also supports transparency, is better format to work with and appears to be processed faster, additionally, images appear to be processed on the CPU which is slower than GPU processing.

Steve-Jones3743 wrote on 5/5/2025, 11:39 AM

Gid wrote on 5/5/2025, 11:46 AM

@Steve-Jones3743 Sorry I didn't need the png, that was a suggestion for you to use instead of the gif format for transparency but thanks for sharing.

I think you need to go back to your project, swap the gif for the png & try the zooming or whatever it was you were doing before, if you still have problems then the gif may not have been the problem & you need to look elsewhere for the problem, maybe the photos -

1 jpg is 7.35mb taken with a camera and the other is 6.83 mb. taken with a mobile phone.

There's an App called MediaInfo that will give a lot of info about different medias, it'll show what your photos are but it's good just for general use & education with other media like videos etc. , Download it, it's free & a fast download with no added adverts or any of that rubbish https://mediaarea.net/en/MediaInfo.
After downloading, right click on the media file in your Windows folder, open MediaInfo, choose Text from the options at the top, drag the edges of the window that pops up so it shows all the information & screen capture that page, post that image on here using the arrow button next to the smiley at the top of a new comment 👍

Or Copy & paste the information in a new comment like this -

------------

Screen capture if you don't know -

Press the Windows key + Shift + S at the same time,

The screen will go slightly darker & these options will show at the top of the screen. Choose Rectangular snip to make a selection on screen with the mouse or Windows snip to select a window. When you have clicked or made your selection the captured image will appear in Notifications bottom right of the screen where you can open & save it for uploading on here using the arrow key next to the smiley at the top of a new comment. .

Sometimes a negative result is also a clue, ie. if your MMS is freezing but your CPU or GPU is doing nothing ...
