Is this a titling bug in VPX?

RogerGunkel wrote on 10/29/2017, 2:41 PM

Having upgraded to VPX recently, I seem to have discovered a titling limitation which wasn't present in VPX7 and versions of MEP that I had previously.

When I film school or theatre productions, I always using a couple of different colours with credits, so for example:

Dracula............John Smith

Grave Robber..Martin Brown

Where the character may be in Yellow and the actor in White. In previous versions, this was just a matter of highlighting the name, then changing the font colour. The highlighted text would change and the remainder would stay the same. Now in VPX, highlighting one piece of text and changing the colour changes the entire text in all the other lines in the text box. Changing a highlighted font to another font still just changes the highlighted text only, so the problem is just with the colour.

Is anyone else finding the same or is it just on mine?

Roger

Hi Roger

Works fine in VPX here.

After changing the text colour are you clicking back into the text with two single clicks in the Program monitor to apply the change as shown below - , the first click selects the Preview monitor, the second back into the text box - note you cannot see the 2 single clicks in the video?

Hi John,

Thanks for the reply and the video which shows that you do the colour change exactly the same way that I have done hundreds of times previously in previous versions. The only difference is that you highlight the text just as I do then click in the colour box, but as soon as I do that, the highlight disappears, if I then click ok in the text menu, the whole text changes. I can't work out why the highlight disappears as it has always worked correctly in the previous versions and still works correctly for font changes!!!

Is your version 15.04.176?

browj2 wrote on 10/29/2017, 6:05 PM

Hi Roger,

I get the same as John EB, using 15.0.4.176. Make sure to not touch anything in the text box of the title dialogue area, only the text box in the preview monitor. Accept the title by clicking on the checkmark in the title box of the preview monitor.

Guys I appreciate the suggestions, but I have been using various versions of MEP and VPX for a few years, every single day to earn my living and I do titling several times a week. The behaviour the programme is showing is not normal so I have added a screen grab of a complete colour change, then a word change. The highlighting disappears each time then the whole text changes.

Here is an example of doing the same thing in ProX7 to show you that I am doing it in the same way in both programmes

Hi Roger,

Something is wrong with your installation, I think. As soon as you click on the colour button, the highlighted text switches off, the check mark/cancel buttons on the text box in the preview monitor shut off. They should stay on. What is causing this, I don't know. I thought that it might be because of the multi-ripple mode, but, no.

When you select the text object on the timeline, are you doing a single or double-click to turn on the box. I have to do a double-click and it appears that you are doing a single-click. Could that be the cause, something in a set up somewhere requiring a single click?

Hi Roger

Have you changed your mouse mode in Windows so that a single click opens items instead of a double click - option shown below ?

If so then this could be the cause of the problem and is causing the check mark/cancel buttons on the text box in the preview monitor to shut off.

Hi John,

I think you must be in a different part of the world to me as your post came in at 2.35am UK time!

I double click the time line to open the box, probably too quick to show on the video. I have tried single clicking, multi clicking and close to a kicking but to no avail. It's only the colour change that seems to be affected as using the same procedure for font change works fine. You could be correct about an installation fault although with the heavy work load that we have at the moment there is no time to go through the installation again. It's usually school's projects that need the colour titling so we can always edit those on VPX7 if we have to.

It does seem strange that it is only the colour change that is affected, so hope there is a quick work around or file that can be updated.

Hi John EB,

Your post appeared after I replied to John CB.

I tried changing the mouse to one click and it made no difference. I suspected that would be the case as it changes fonts fine and works normally with VPX7. It has to be an error somewhere in my installation but something really minor as it doesn't seem to affect anything else.

Hi Roger,

I work 24/7. Actually, I'm in Montreal. Saturday morning, I was at Heathrow, same as the previous Saturday, and Monday to Friday, in southern Africa. I'm suffering from jet lag.

Did you try the same thing with the fonts? I would have to presume that the same problem would exist.

Hi,

While on the subject of titles, Walter did up a nice tutorial in German that shows many interesting ideas for titles. The first part is the normal parameters, but he goes into masks and creating things in drawing programs for use in VPX, as well as some handmade titles using things like twigs.

Hi Roger

. . . . must be a problem with the titling part of my installation as I have now noticed another couple of peculiarities with drop shadows and 3d depth. . . .

I do not think so - I think it is a bug as I found several oddities yesterday (when doing a quick demo video) with the following:

  • Drop shadow
  • Border
  • Border colour
  • Size/positioning a title (MEP 2018 only)

For the first three items, if the text is highlighted they do not always work, if you select the title object but not the text they work. These are also in MEP 2018

Size/positioning makes the title background go white, however selecting another object or moving the timeline cursor the display returns to normal.

Good Morning,

@John EB

So it's not just my installation, which is a partial relief. I played around last night and found that I can only get the Blur and Transparency sliders working when the text object is selected but not if text was highlighted. I haven't found any way round the colour change with highlighting, only for changing the colour of all the text. I will have to use separate text objects if I want different colours. Haven't tried borders as yet, but will probably find the same as you.

@John CB

Thanks for the link, I will have a look at that once I get the next project finished.

Hi Roger,

Probably not the cause, but which version and build of Windows are you using. I am on W10 1703 on my desktop, 1709 on my Surface Pro 4. Same result on both.

BTW if you have Xara Designer Pro X or Xara Photo & Graphics Designer (recent version) you can create text using Xara directly from VPX and do a lot more than VPX can. Here is are a couple of examples:

And, of course, you can do a lot more with Xara.

Hi

I may also have experienced some odd behaviour in the VPX titler but can't remember what.....it may have been the border option John EB mentioned.

Another work around may be to use the Magix 3D Maker available from the 3D text option in VPX.

Hi Peter,

Yes Magix 3d text maker can be quite useful and I have used it from time to time for some interesting titles on school productions.

Interesting that you may also have had some odd behaviour in the titler, maybe there is a minor bug that only a few have picked up on.

browj2 wrote on 11/2/2017, 1:39 PM

Hi Roger,

You may want to check out Xara. You actually have a light version, Xara Xtreme that comes with VPX and is used for creating labels. The full program can use the .XAR files and you can do what you want with them. Scan for .xar files and you will see that you have many.

In VPX under the Import tab, Magix tools, XAR animation, try adding one to the timeline. For me, the fully-blown Xara Designer Pro X opens in the animation part

One of the most useful things is creating animated masks to get rid of, or hide something. This is like rotoscoping but often without having to go frame by frame. You can modify the mask shape, any shape that you draw, and the mask will tween from frame to frame. The modification can be made at the interval that you set, say 1/2 second or 1 second, thus avoiding frame by frame rotoscoping.

If you add something into a video as part of the background and someone walks in front of it, you can trace around the person or body part and mask it so that the person is in front of the object and not behind it. The animated mask comes back into VPX and you can give it a chromakey alpha.

Of course, there are many uses for Xara, including modifying the DVD/BD menus by exporting to psd file, modifying whatever, say a button, in Xara, and sending it back.

In VPX, right-click on a video object, select Video Effects, Create overlay graphics/animations and Xara will open in the animator and you see the video in the background. I don't know what happens if you don't have Xara, however.

Hi John CB,

That's very informative, I'll have a quick look and see what Xara files there are in my VPX. What I may also do is get the full programme over the Winter as I will have time to play about with it in our down season. Some of the effects you describe sound really worth playing with, especially as I haven't played with masks at all.

At the moment though we have 11 multi camera weddings to edit before Christmas, plus the usual School nativities to film and another wedding on December 27th, so we are somewhat busy for a while 😵
