Kit Lens versus 50mm

nirvanray wrote on 3/29/2015, 4:24 AM

Dear firnds,

A small confusion. My kit lens can cover 18mm to 55mm. Now I got a 50mm one as well and yes the differnece is awesome.

But just I want to clear why do we need to buy a separate 50mm lens because insn't the 18 to 55 mm lens (kit Lens) cover all? I mean eve 50mm is within this range? Then why is this separate one?

Just curious.

Regards.

Hi Anirban

Kit zoom lenses are cheaper and are built to lower specification and lower quality.

They generally give softer images and / or have some distortion effect at the wide angle settings ie 18mm end of the zoom range.

A prime lens has all fixed elements apart from focussing and therefore have a sharper definition.

For my Canon I have swapped to the professional L series lenses and the performance is outstanding, but so is the cost - about €1500 /  US$1600 for one zoom lens!
