lifetime downloads? MM14 not available anymore??

jadmix wrote on 10/16/2012, 8:05 AM

I have been using mm14 producer edition (download version) since 2008, bought the full version, had to have my pc recently rebooted to factory settings, so went to magix website to d/l software and only get an error, went to technical support and got the following:

The selected product has been for several years no longer available as part of our software catalogue. Due to changes in hardware and Operating Systems, we are unable to guarantee performance or compatibility on new systems. Unfortunately, this also means that E-Mail support is unavailable for this product. Please use the free online help resources at Find an Answer and MAGIX.info or you can view and trial the newer version of your product at our MAGIX homepage . For upgrade information, please contact Sales either through the Contact Form or by ringing Sales on 305-722-5810 (9am - 4pm EST, Mon - Fri). Many thanks for your understanding.

How is that a lifetime download?, my only option now is to upgrade to a newer version at cost to me,not what i would call good customer service.

Thanks for sharing this, but I was wondering, where did the term lifetime download come from? I am only asking because I am not sure if the term "lifetime" is in reference to the user (us) or the program. I would assume program and if so, it is past its lifetime as Magix has had five new releases on the same product line. For that reason I can understand that the product is not supported anymore, with all the updates that have happened (including a new Windows release).  I do not think the Music Maker 14 will operate correctly in Windows 7 even if the download was accessible.

Regardless, I recommend that when you purchase a download version from anywhere, that you burn the file to disc for later use or, purchase the back-up disc.

Hi,

I want you to be clear about somehting.  This is a user forum, it is not a Magix sales or support forum.  Here we are all users trying to help other users.  We are not Magix employees, just users.

I would like to add a little to what John-Auvil has said.  As a consumer when I see the word "lifetime" I assume it means my lifetime, but I always check the terms and conditions to understand what is meant by "lifetime".  I used to work for a major computer company and some products and software had a "lifetime" guarantee.  What that actually meant was that the guarantee was for the "lifetime" of the product, not the purchaser.  Once the product went out of support, that was the end of guarantee.

If you think about it realistically, no company can offer you anything for your lifetime because they have no idea how long you will live, if they will be in business for your life time, or if they sell that segment of their business that the acquiring company will assume that liability.

Whenever I see the term "lifetime" I always look at the terms and what the definition of "lifetime" really is.  Also whenever I purchase a new software product, I back it up to a seperate hard drive so that I have the ability to restore the application at a later date.  In addition I keep very detailed records of the serial numbers of all software products that I purchase as well as the terms and conditions of purchase.

It is not a matter of customer service, it is a matter of the terms and conditions of sale and purchase.  If you have a copy of those terms and conditions, and it clearly says your lifetime, then you would have a very valid reason to call (not write to) Magix sales and request a replacement product.

Good Luck,

George

Hi

Also to add to John and George's answers - when you purchase 'software' for the most part you are purchasing a licence to use the software - you never own the software.

Many software companies define lifetime as being the period the software is in general release plus either:-

A number of years support and/or availablility after ceasing production or being superceded by a newer version

Or

Support and/or availability for a limited number of versions .

John

First up i realise this is a user forum, i posted here as i was directed here via a link from the magix website,

as for the lifetime issue I have had to download theproduct before even though there were several later versions released the one i purchased was still available and the lifetime downloads is on Magix site:

http://www.magix.com/gb/support/advantages-when-you-buy-direct/

i can understand where you(s) are coming from ( it being an old programme) but in fairness the re isno way that the programme is that big that they cannot keep it on their servers, i used to use mm5 and only when vista came out i had to change it at that stage they had reached mm14, i am still using vista.

Hi,

I had a look at the link that you posted and checked the terms and conditions and could find no definition of "lifetime".  You probably have a really good case to go to Magix sales with this information and ask the to either provide you with a download of the sofware that you purchased or provide you with an equivalent product to substitute for the one that they no longer support.

Good Luck
