Loss of video preview and playback

david-s6917 wrote on 4/16/2018, 10:39 AM

Hello all -

I am running MEP 16 v 15.0.0.90 on a HP windows 10 machine

I used this program for quite some time with zero issues; loved it. I moved, and had to do a reset on my computer. I downloaded MEP 16 again with no problems.

Now I go to create a new project and I have no video preview or playback ability anywhere in the program. I am using .MOV files from my drone, which I have done 1000 times in the past. I can see still images, but zero video function.

I get an error message that says 'The playback device "none" cannot play back this format! Reason: A device ID has been used that is out of range for your system.'

I've poked around the help and all the settings but can't seem to put anything together. I have also reset to default settings and still same result. It seems that the issue is on my end with the computer, but I really have no idea where to start looking.

Thanks in advance, Dave

Hi

. . . . MEP 16 v 15.0.0.90 . . . .

Please do not abbreviate the year number of the program, it can cause confusion with older versions of the program.

You are missing at least one or more patches - that last version number for Movie Edit Pro 2016 is 15.0.0.114 - try updating the program first.

If the update does not fix the issue then:

  1. if you have Quicktime installed try uninstalling to see if the issue is fixed

    or

  2. if Quicktime is not installed then try installing it to see if the issue is fixed.

You should not need to have Quicktime installed in order to import the MOV files correctly, only if you need to export as MOV file format.

John -

Thanks for the reply!

I verified my version and it was in fact 15.0.0.90. I then checked for online updates in the program and it said that it was up to date.

I did not have Quicktime installed on my computer so I installed that (version 7.7.4 if I remember correctly) and had the same result.

Finally, I uninstalled and reinstalled Movie Edit Pro 2016 via online download. Once installed, I checked for updates which it did install. I saw in the update description version 15.0.0.114 which you mentioned. Once completed, the problem still persisted with no video playback or preview.

I then checked under the 'programs' tab and it still showed version 15.0.0.90 for some reason, even though the updates had installed correctly.

Do you have any other ideas as for what I should be looking at? Thanks again for your help!

Hi Dave

Check that your graphics card/chipset drivers have not been updated.

In the Program settings, Display options tab, try changing the video mode to see if this affects the issue.

. . . . I then checked under the 'programs' tab . . . .

The correct version number should be under Help, About . . . . within MEP

Ahhh, yes, the version is 15.0.0.114. Thanks for showing me how to properly check that.

I tried all available options and combinations of options under the 'Display Options' tab for the video modes with no change. I also tried some different 'playback' settings to no avail.

Thanks again,

Dave

Edit to add: I cannot even preview effects or title animations. It will show in the preview window but will not play.

Hi

Do other video file formats display OK on the preview screen or is the issue exhibited with any video format?

Have you tried restarting the computer - Windows key, Power button, Restart - not Shutdown - there may be a pending Windows update?

Your computer specification may also give us a clue - please include the following:

  • Processor make/model, graphics card or chipset make/model, audio card or chipset make/model, RAM,  hard drive configuration and sizes?

  • Windows version and is it up to date?  Press and hold down the Windows key and the R key - in the dialog that opens type in winver and press enter.

An analysis of one of the MOV clips may also help - use MediaInfo to analyse a problem clip and post the results from the Tree view in MediaInfo.

As a last resort check the Windows installation is OK, assuming you are on Windows 10 follow steps 3 to 11 in this tutorial. For Windows 8 and 7 the procedure is similar

Will do later on today, John. I do think there could have been a couple glitches when I had to reset my computer because I lost all sound. Until now, that was the only issue I knew of.

Thanks,

Dave

John -

I only use a couple video file formats but yes, they all do not work the same way.

I have restarted my computer as you described many times. I have not had any update notifications, and I checked in my notifications icon on the bottom right of my screen.

My Windows version is 1709 (OS Build 16299.371) - Windows 10

Processor - i5-4430

Audio card just updated to Creative Blaster Audigy Fx

10GB Ram (8+2 if I remember correctly)

1TB disc hard drive

Intel(R) HD Graphics 4600

Everything else checked out OK, including the system scan. I think I am going to do a system reset because I am at the end of my rope here.

Thanks for all the help, I'll keep ya posted
