magix movie edit pro 2022 premium codecs?

Ted-Wilby wrote on 7/2/2022, 12:11 PM

So... I tried to reinstall Magix Movie Edit Pro 2022 Premium. I have some files produced by other people I wanted to edit and merge together. Some are 4K MKV and MTS files. Some just 1080. Some are MP4 files. Some play in other software but won't in Magix. What gives? The manual says the software will take me to a place where I can activate Codecs or registration for certain formats when I try to use them, but it doesn't and never has to my Knowledge.

How do I get these files to work in Magix Movie Edit Pro 2022 Premium???

Are there settings in the program I need to change?

Do I need some other codecs? How do I activate them?

@Ted-Wilby

Hi

. . . . Some are 4K MKV and MTS files. Some just 1080. Some are MP4 files. . . . .

The file extensions you have quoted are 'container file' formats not video codecs which are what is inside the container file.

The most common codecs inside these file formats are:

VIDEO:
h.264/AVC/AVCHD, MPEG-2 and h.265 - the latter 2 are the ones that you will be taken to activate and purchase respectively.

AUDIO
AAC, AC 3, PCM and WAV - note AC 3 is supported for import only, export is not available due to licensing issues.

As you have not been taken to activate/purchase a codec then you have not imported a video yet containing these codecs.

. . . . Some play in other software but won't in Magix. . . . .

What happens in other software has no relevance as to whether a codec is supported in the program.

Do you mean you are either getting no audio or the video is blank/black?

If so then this is most likely the Program settings, Import, Processing and Export settings are incorrectly set.

I suspect that the three settings are set to the Quadro K4200 - set them all to CPU - you have no graphics card/iGPU which can help with decoding/hardware acceleration of the video. The Xeon processor does not have an integrated GPU, and the K4200 does have NVENC support which is required.

There are some video codecs that require Quicktime to be installed, however Apple dropped support for Quicktime for Windows many years ago and the available installation is old and does not support some newer more modern Apple codecs. You will get a message that Quicktime is not installed for these codecs.

If any of video files are from mobile phones/iPads etc you may have another potential issue with audio synchronisation, this is usually due to the framerate of of the video is Variable, video standard requires and exports at Constant framerate. If the sync issue arises they will need converting from Variable framerate to Constant.

To aid in determining if this is necessary download and install MediaInfo and analyse one of the clips, see this tutorial on how to setup MediaInfo and analyse a video clip for all the data required.

If you see this line in the Video section of the data

Frame rate mode            : Variable

The video may need converting I use Handbrake for this.

Hi Ted.

John hasn't yet said anything about replacing graphics cards yet as that may not cure your problem or even touch it at all.

More important is to find out the internal data from the files being used. If any of those wrappers contain Pro Res 4:4:4: you can probably forget being able to handle them at all as they are mainly Mac orientated file types.

Most file types that do not play in the Windows Film and TV application are much harder to process on a Windows machine but not necessarily impossible. We need the information from the file types you are using to give you more accurate advice. Players like VLC will play those files as they have permission from Apple to use their codecs. That increases sales of Macs eventually (When people realise they can't edit those codecs on most video editing packages) whereas allowing third party video editing applications doesn't sell Apple products and so is either withheld from such applications or charged a lot in licence fees to enable.

Basically any card nvidia that will give you access to Direct X 12 and has a Turing processor or preferably newer with at least 6GB of vram. Assuming it is compatible with your motherboard. But As I say, that may not be the main problem to overcome.

Ray.

Hi

. . . . what video card could you suggest that would run in this Z840 Workstation . . . .

Unfortunately this is where you are very limited - the motherboard, in the Z840 has PCIE 2 connectivity which limits you to a NVidia GTX 10xx series graphics card, minimum specification is the 1050.

The higher end GTX 16 xx and RTX xxxx series require PCIE 3 minimum.

This restriction also imposes limits on the performance of the computer when using 2.7K 4K UHD or higher resolution and/or h.265 (HEVC) video.

There are steps you can take to aid preview playback performance:

  • Use proxy files - these are lower resolution files created on import, they do require additional disc space however - the option is in the project settings dialog
  • Set the preview monitor Lightning symbol bottom right to on (blue) - this will reduce the framerate taking some load off the system

Note: if you work, or intend to work, with 4K UHD or higher resolution video then you may want to consider upgrading to a new computer. An Intel i7, generation 10 or later, processor with integrated GPU and a Nvidia RTX 30xx series graphics card would give you the best combination for video editing and a degree of future proofing.

So....John,

This Z840 can do PCIe 3 x 16

I'm thinking about buying an MSI Ventus GeForce RTX 2060 12GB GDDR6 PCI Express 3.0 x 16 ATX Video Card RTX 2060 VENTUS GP 12G OC that's on sale for about $400. More than that I can't really afford.

I've also discovered l can I open and use these files on my old Lenovo i7 running Windows 7 and Magix Movie Edit Pro MX but not in the newer Magix Movie Edit Pro 2022 Premium on my new but refurbished HP Z840 ? Any thoughts on that?

And the reason I bought the Z840 was to gain some speed for two camera editing and a few other projects that require a little more umph. Like these MTS and MVK 4K files.

Hi

. . . . This Z840 can do PCIe 3 x 16 . . . .  GeForce RTX 2060 12GB GDDR6 . . . .

My apologies I missed you had the dual Xeon processor motherboard version.

I have the RTX 2060 both in my PC and laptop and am pleased with its performance when it comes to preview playback, and video rendering on export to accelerated formats h.264/AVC and HEVC.

I am not sure if Movie Studio can take advantage of the dual processors, even using just one with 8 cores/16 threads the program should perform well for those effects and objects which cannot be accelerated by the RTX 2060.
