I see I can activate the MP3 Surround Encoder codec for an additional fee. Because it's listed as a "Surround" encoder, will it encode in true multi-track sound similar to like a SACD? Or can either program do this already?

Bit of confusion here I think - a SACD (Super Audio CD \0 is a media format which can handle stereo and surround sound audio and is AFAIK virtually defunct. - it never took off and replaced the CD.
Surround sound (5.1) is recorded in 5 channels, left and right main speakers (stereo), a center channel for movie dialog and on-screen action, two rear speakers to surround the listener and a .1 channel (pronounced 'point-one channel') for bass. The .1 channel is intended for a subwoofer.
The installed manual has a section on surround sound recording and exporting - follow the steps there and you will be notified by the program if you need to buy the codec - it all depends which version of MMM you have.

Hi John, thanks for the response. I guess what I was trying to ask was, with the MP3 Surround code, can I make a true multi-channel CD for my car lets say or does making a true 5.1 or 7.1 channel CD require special blank media? Was the SACD (and I still have a few of them along with a DVD player that will play those back in a 7.1 home AV system) a special disk compared to a normal audio CD as far as recording layers is concerned? I did some seaching on the web and it looks like the Fraunhofer surround codec (both MP3s and MP3x) are available for free online. What I want to do is record my multitrack projects on a CD in MP3 format for play in my vehicle but I don't want the program to downmix it to stereo.

The coded audio is 'multiplexed' so that all the data is in one file, if you play it on a non surround sound player it can only use channel 1 (Stereo L+R front) the other channels are ignored, in a surround sound capable player it will use all the channels so you should not have any problems with your systems.
In MMM the surround sound is turned on in the Mixer (M key) then you can make all the positional adjustments you need and export as surround sound.

Does the car player have to have DTS certification for multi-channel playback? How can I tell if my car sound system (Infinity Premium in 2004 Mitsubishi Endeavor) will play more than two channels?
