Magix Running Slow - maybe it is my setup?

rosa-guthrie wrote on 2/3/2018, 9:56 AM

Hello Community, My magix (latest version, it's all updated) is running sluggish (it has done it from the beginning). Also feels like it locks up a bit when cutting/pasting (not 4k video, but an average video from like an iPhone or a video capture). Magix is installed on my SSD. The files are saved there as well as I work on them. I'm not certain if it's lack of memory, video card, or what?!

How does my system look for video editing with Magix?

Hi.

You say "my Magix" without actually telling us which program (and variant) you are running. Please check under Help>About and tell us what it says.

I see nothing in your computer spec that might indicate why you have a problem, but merely saying it is "running sluggish" doesn't really tell us what the problem is. To help you we need to know the exact format of the video files you are importing (the free MediaInfo utility can give you this information), what, if any, "editing" you have done and to what you are attempting to export them.

However, I did notice you say that your files are from an "iPhone or a video capture". Certainly for the iPhone and quite possibly for the video capture also, the frame rate is almost certain to be "variable" (MediaInfo will confirm this, or otherwise). Video editing programs generally do not "like" variable frame rate footage and will struggle to play it or edit it. If they are, indeed, "variable", you will need to find a convertor to change them to a fixed frame rate.

You also say

Magix is installed on my SSD. The files are saved there as well as I work on them

Is this the same drive as Windows is installed to, SSD or otherwise? It is always best practice to have your data files (the video files) on a different drive to the one where Windows and your programs are installed. In my case I have a dedicated SSD for Windows and one or two programs only, a separate HDD for the majority of my programs and further internal and external HDDs, both SATA and USB, for data files. I very much doubt whether your problem is anything to do with " lack of memory, video card".

Thanks for the info Jeff. I'm very new to the whole video edit thing.
I have Movie Edit Pro Premium
version 17.0.2.159

To help you we need to know the exact format of the video files you are importing (the free MediaInfo utility can give you this information)

I'll download that and take a peek. Honestly, the format doesn't seem to matter. A video capture in mp4 format, and whatever native iPhone format behave the same. The main "sluggishness" seems mostly to happen while scrubbing. Anytime I move the bar to a spot and try to hit play it takes 20-30 seconds to start playing. Eons ago I used some sort of adobe program for editing (10+ years ago) for work training videos, and it just never behaved like this. I have some family in town, but as soon as I have time to load a vid I'll check it out.

Is this the same drive as Windows is installed to, SSD or otherwise? It is always best practice to have your data files (the video files)

This might be an issue... Windows IS installed on the same SSD as Magix. I'm looking into a second SSD to run the app/save working projects now.

Hi,

I use my iPhone 6S+ for all my video clips these days and have no apparent problems with frame rate mode.

To check that issue first, try playing the shortest clip I could find:

https://www.dropbox.com/s/04chi7pi5wg28ua/20170427-095537.mov?dl=0

As well as showing us your file information as Jeff suggests, If possible can you also upload a very small example of yours to a hosting site (I use Dropbox) so that we can test it.

Presumably you've tried a program settings reset?

BTW, once you've displayed you file's info with MediaInfo, you can export it as a text file. Here's a fragment of mine for that uploaded MOV file.

Frame rate mode                          : Variable
Frame rate                               : 29.970 (29970/1000) FPS
Minimum frame rate                       : 28.571 FPS
Maximum frame rate                       : 30.000 FPS

Thank you Terry. I'll try to do some testing this week when the fam visit leaves.
