Magix Store Purchases

martin-brennan wrote on 7/13/2020, 4:48 AM

I'm looking to buy a load of music collections from the Magix online store.

I've been looking at the T&Cs for a non-commercial license but cannot find clarification on one aspect of usage.

Can these music pieces be used in videos i upload to Youtube? My YT channel does not make money in any way whatsoever, it's just general interest stuff and doesn't use ads or any other funding.

Sorry, one other question: where do the extra content files (music and video) download to locally? i can't find these, for exampled: there's currently five music files sunrise.ogg springtime.ogg etc - but a search of my computer does not find them, i'd like to back these files up to my NAS drive.

thanks

Hi Martin.

It's a good question.

If other people see adverts attached to your videos then money is being made whether you get it or not so I would guess that that could be considered commercial use. To be blunt I don't know. Possibly the best course of action would be to contact Magix sales and ask.

well, they (Magix) have now confirmed that their music packs can be used for YT videos where no money is made.

so, like a fool i purchased a pack for £14.99. little did i know that

a] these can only be used in Magix

b] they're all (50 tracks) stored in 50 individual subfolders below \shopmanager folder

c] they're all .mgxcogg files

why can't they be uncomplicated? nothing else will play these files! so i can't listen/preview other than in Magix - what a pain

even more infuriating, if i'd bought directly from producer planet, the packs come in a handy zip file

wish i'd known.

not buying anything from Magix again after this experience. 15 years i've used their software, and lately it's become awful, constant update/update nag lockups and other "immobilizers" preventing access to my own legally-bought software - and why do they do it? because they can't just accept that you might be happy with the version you have.

Hi Martin.

I do have the odd audio track from the Magix store. None of them have the extension .mgxcogg but just ogg.

The reason that you can only open them in The Magix software could be the program associated ogg files to itself when you set the program up.

Try right clicking on any of your ogg files and get it to open with a Windows default program like Groove Music and see if it plays in Groove Music. If it does you can safely then associate those files with the windows program and the Magix software should still be able to use them.

The only reasons I can think of for Magix or any other company to use ogg files is they are smaller than wav.files and take up less disk space and are quicker to download. Also unlike Mp3 files they do not have to pay a royalty to ogg vorbis for using the codec on a paid for product.

I hope that clears any problems you are experiencing.

hi

there's two types of downloads of music files:

■ in app store purchase

■ direct download

so, if i purchase from the MEP in-app store the files are all .mxcogg files. so, as i said, the pack (of 50) are delivered into c:\programdata\magix\movie edit pro premium\2018\shopmanager\ - each .mxcogg file is then dropped into its own individual subfolder. ridiculous!

adding insult to injury - these mxcogg files will NOT play in VLC under any circumstances.

however, if i go to the producer planet and download the package from my purchases list then Producer Planet (magix) sends it as a nice convenient .zip file of 50x .ogg files - which will play in VLC.

tell me why (when producer planet is magix own website) the delivery is in two such different and incompatible file formats? unnecessary and utterly stupid. so to be able to view, edit, preview the audio files i have to grab them twice - just so anything but magix can open them. banal.

If you really need to use an mxcogg file on another platform, then simply export it to a wave file.

Hi Martin.

I can understand the frustration especially when there is a difference between download options without any explanation of possible variation or possible limitation of the application of the files bought.

Again I think you should contact Magix sales and ask if you can either have a refund of the effected files in question or replacement files if they exist. Explain calmly why they in your opinion are not fit for purpose.

I had not heard of this problem before nor personally suffered from it.

@CubeAce @martin-brennan

Ray, you are referring to MusicMaker and Soundpools obtained through HumbleBundle, thus almost free. When Magix started the Store within MusicMaker, Soundpools purchased through it had the mxcogg extension and would only work in MusicMaker. Magix has since changed this with MusicMaker and now all Soundpools purchased through the in-app Store are either ogg or wav, the user's choice. Those old mxcogg files no longer work in the latest versions of Music Maker, at least mine do not.

Note that those mxcogg will not work in MEP or VPX either, so they have something that distinguishes that they are for Music Maker only. I still have some laying around.

Audio files purchased through the in-app Store in MEP and VPX can only be used with in that software, and, you can only purchase for non-commercial use only.

Martin, as you found, you can purchase the same packages from Producer and you can purchase for Commercial Standard and Commercial Royalty free licenses. Not so within MEP.

Purchasing in-app puts them under the Audio tab for use within MEP; audio files purchased through Producer Planet do not show up under the audio tab. You put them where you want and you make your own link to them in MEP, something that has confused users who are not very computer-literate. If you have to reinstall MEP on your computer or you install on another computer, MEP will prompt you to download everything that you purchased through the in-app Store. Not so with purchases from Producer Planet.

Now for the good news.

Martin, when you go into Producer Planet, did you go to My Products and look to see if the Music Collections that you purchased from within MEP are there? Mine are, and I can download the zip file which contains ogg files of my Song collections.

Case closed?

Hi John

with regard to your final paragraph: as i've alrready said (above) i've downloaded the nice convenient .zip of ogg files from Producer Planet (Magix) website. Producer Planet even confirm themselves as Magix by asking for my Magix login - and then providing the download link to my Magix purchases (this time as a zip (of oggs) rather than as a pile of mxcogg files (that MEP provide from the in-app purchses) -that can not be used in any non-Magix app.

so my point still remains: why issue them in this inconvenient mxcogg way, if Magix also provide backups of your purchases on their ProducerPlanet site as oggs ?

it's nonsense - just deliver the files (either direct from and to MEP or standalone PP in the self same ogg format. the whole thing is proprietary protectionist rubbish and needs to be addressed.

so sorry, case is NOT closed. far from it

browj2 wrote on 7/24/2020, 4:53 PM

Re-read what I wrote.

Everything purchased within MEP is set up so that they work in MEP. The idea is to use them in MEP, not some other software.

99% of user will not be able to figure out how to download, unzip files to a folder, and find them within MEP.

However, Magix also gives you access to the same audio files, but not mxcogg, through Producer Planet. But, you the user, have to figure out what to do with them.

The same applies to transitions, intros/outros, effects, etc.

I thought that this was obvious.

i perfectly understood your reply, but, i think you've missed my point. i'll summarise:

what Magix do is unnecessarily messy.

the in-app store purchases should be downloaded and delivered to ONE folder (not 50 subfolders), and should be straightforward .ogg files not mgcogg.

Hi

. . . . what Magix do is unnecessarily messy. . . . .

It may appear so, however to clarify:

Before the in-app store was introduced, a set number of soundpools, loops, song maker styles etc were included with the programs. The original loop format was changed to mxogg, which is a DRM'd version of the loops, locking them to Magix programs only, many years ago.

Extra soundpools, loops, etc, were available from Catooh - which was owned by Magix.

Catooh was superceded by Producer Planet, also owned by Magix, and the loops changed to ogg and wav so they are no longer locked to a specific program - there is, AFAICS, no restriction on which software they are used in providing you have the correct licence for the end product usage.

However they had also to continue support for older programs which require the mxogg format, which should eventually disappear.
