Magix Video Resolutions Incorrect?

My interest was piqued by a recent post where a users movie settings had changed when they hit "Adjust".

I was going to suggest resetting to "4k" but in that topic, they mentioned 1920x1080, which is 16:9. I had a look at the Magix presets and 4k is 17:9, or 4096x2160 so I didn't want to suggest that. But on Wiki, 4k is 3840x2160 which is 16:9. Magix calls this "Ultra HDTV". Similarly, Magix 5k, 6k and 8k bear no resemblance to the Wiki figures.

Has Magix got this horribly wrong?

Since then we've advanced to MP4 and to bigger and bigger resolutions. I was really suffering, not so much in editing (with proxies) but in encoding, which just took ages. A video, with Neat Video noise reduction applied, would encode at 12% of film speed. My new system 1 does the same job at 160% of film speed. Marvellous. I'm keeping my old system as a capture station for analogue video tapes and DV.

@AAProds @browj2 No Wiki has got it wrong, It's just a misnomer isn't it, people refer to 4k but they're talking about 3840 x 2160 which is really UHD 16:9,

My phone has it correct,

The setting far right you can't see HD - 1280 x 720 (16:9)

The setting FHD at the top produces 1920 x 1080 (16:9)

The setting UHD at the top produces 3840 x 2160 (16:9)

The setting 8K at the top produces 7680 x 4320 (16:9)

Hi Al.

Video resolutions are historically based on camera sensor ratios which are generally 4:3 (As in 35mm and 70mm film stock) so 4K would be 4096x2160 of which I can set both my video cameras to capture. This gives some leeway when editing vertically and allows me for instance to move the image upwards so as not cut someone's head off in a shot. I used this to some effect to better frame a marching band coming down a hill towards me in a parade once.

Also remember your monitor and TV was once 3:4. It is only since cinema started to be able to change its screen ratios via screen curtain adjustments to give a more 'wide screen' effect that other screen ratios over time became more popular and available.

Here's were misnomers start, Vegas has UHD & 4k,

UHD is either Portrait or Landscape, both are 3840 x 2160 (16:9) or vice versa

4K is only in portrait mode but is 2304 x 4096 which is 9:16 🤷‍♂️😂

As does virtually every other Google hit on "what is 4k".

Despite that, I now see the technical difference between UHD and 4k.

Which raises a question: given that there are no 4096x2160 (17:9) screens, Magix 4k would produce a 17:9 file that will give letterboxed video. I can't see why Magix 4k is of benefit to anyone. UHD, on the other hand. 21:9 (Ultra-widescreen) and wider are obviously "wide" screen for a reason (cinema-like/copy), 17:9 gives small black bars top and bottom. Why would anybody make a 17:9/4k project verses a 16:9/UHD project that fits perfectly to every widescreen TV and monitor out there?

I also note that the Magix 6k (4992x3744) is 2.35:1 but those values resolve to 4:3, which implies a movie would have non-square pixels; odd for a modern digital format.

I think to the average user filming n editing with their phones it can be a bit confusing when UHD gets commonly called 4k, but Magix having UHD & 4k project templates & export options means they're catering for both worlds, -

Google -

The basic rule of picture clarity is that the higher the pixel count, the higher the image's resolution. 4K image technology was initially introduced for digital cinema, which standardized the spec for digital projection in movie theaters at 4,096 x 2,160 pixels. A 4K TV comes equipped with this same resolution—roughly four times the resolution of the previous 1080 standard—whereas UHD offers a display resolution of 3,840 x 2,160. While this is slightly short of "true" 4K, UHD resolution is often rounded-up and referred to as 4K for the sake of simplicity. But in reality, there is technically more texture and detail shown in a 4,096 x 2,160 display resolution than UHD.

Truth be known, buying a 4K TV versus a UHD TV will not make much of a difference to the average viewer, with both offering excellent resolution. However, if having the highest possible picture clarity is essential to you, you'll want to look for a 4K unit that displays at 4,096 x 2,160.

PS, the 3840 x 2160 vids i put on YT are 4k in the settings 😂

full screen you get the black bars top n bottom

I haven't come across a "4k" ie 4096 TV at all. I don't think they're available from the mainstream vendors. Panasonic, Samsung and LG market their 3840x2160 UHD TVs as 4k.

However, if having the highest possible picture clarity is essential to you, you'll want to look for a 4K unit that displays at 4,096 x 2,160.

But if you have a "normal" widescreen video ie 16:9, it will be stretched on a true 4k screen, or have black bars either side so picture clarity might be great but it'll be warped.

Because "4k" is cooler than "UHD". 🙂

Gid, RC "stats for nerds". You'll see the actual resolution.

YT will fit it's player window around your video, regardless of what "shape/ratio" it is. There are no black bars with YT (unless the person who posted the video deliberately encoded them in). So a true "4k" video will be wider than a UHD video.

I think we had a similar discussion not long ago, but it is good to see YT does not call 1280x720 HD which is good, because if 1920x1080 is (Full) HD then 1280x720 shoud be 1/2 HD in my opinion because you can not get any more Full than Full, and if you did it would Overflowing HD - which is Silly!

Hi Al.

If you have an OLED or quantum dot LED TV you will not see a black bar on the screen as they have 'perfect black' screens as those pixels are effectively turned off and do not rely on back screen illumination.

While I agree it is a bit bizarre to think about having such a screen ratio today, if you are a photographer and want not to crop your images while editing, such a monitor could be beneficial to correct vignetting when using very wide angle lenses. Some people still upload their images to Flickr un-cropped as well as producing videos of slide shows in that aspect ratio.

Ray, what I was getting at was that there will be a visible gap between the edge of the video and the edge of the screen. And it will be "no-colour".

I see your point, but the fact is they don't appear to exist. The next widest from 16:9 seems to be 21:9.

Hi Al.

While the screen ratios are different there are monitors that display 4K correctly but blank to the sides when displaying.

[Edit] I take that back. The specs on that site are incorrect.

Even 8K monitors are displaying at a 16:9 ratio. 7680 x 4320

Hi everyone.

In a nutshell the naming conventions for video resolutions is a result of the different industries - camera and TV manufacturers and the film industry never agreeing on a unified naming convention for resolutions and marketing departments coming up with meaningless 'snappy' names which make a particular product sound better than the competitors has led to the mess we have today.

Imagine the conversation of a marketing (M) and development (D).

D - "We have a new tv to go to market what shall we call it"

M - "What is the resolution?"

D - "3840 x 2160px 16:9 - we adopted the original widescreen film AR"

M - "Lets call if '4K' short and snappy, sounds good"

D - "But the horizontal resolution is not 4K which is 4096"

M - "Hmmm good point - let's call it 4K UHD "

D - "Thats sound impressive - let's go with that."

Hi John.

Advertising marketing people are on my list of jobs should never have been created IMHO. Along with lawyers, estate agents, Street charity collectors, street market researchers, door to door salespersons, telemarketers, and the other 1001 odd jobs that no member of the public actually asked for. 🤣🤣🤣

Please for anyone else reading this, take the list with a pinch of salt. Trying to keep pace in a modern world without sometimes even misguided guidance or help is both time consuming and often baffling. But it does make my blood boil. It started for me when the Japanese audio industry started changing power output specifications to look good against British and American Hi-Fi amplifiers🤬.
