Hej

Hi
My recommendation is to work with all your files in a local folder/folders which is located within your Documents folder, ie those created by Video deluxe (VDL).

VDL is a non destructive editor and makes no changes to the media you import into the software to the video files this causes issues with  using One Drive as your main storage.

The performance of VDL will suffer, due to One-Drive while editing, and will be dependent on your Internet connection speed when requesting and uploading video and the support files it creates, which are accessed when importing and previewing.

That's the challenge, VDL creates the folders in One Drive\Verner -Personal\Documents\MAGIX Every time it is started, even if I have moved/changed them. But it is necessary that I have One Drive on my PC without VDL creating folders there.

Hi,

In VDL, Project Settings, Folders, change the location of the folders to be somewhere else. As well, make sure that none of your videos, photos and audio files are located on OneDrive.

Then, move any files that were in the Magix documents/project folders to the new locations.

I have changed the VDL settings folders, but VDL still creates new folders in documents when VDL is started. It is wrong that I cannot have photos in documents that have nothing to do with VDL. Attaching a screenshot of the project settings folders. I have changed the VDL settings folders, but VDL still creates new folders in documents when VDL is started. There must be something in VDL startup that creates these folders that need to be changed.

Hi

. . . . VDL still creates new folders in documents when VDL is started. It is wrong that I cannot have photos in documents that have nothing to do with VDL . . . .

That is correct, the folder should be called Magix within which you have a series of subfolders, the software main folders are in

Documents\MAGIX\Video deluxe 2026 edition\ as shown below.

Good practice is to organise a structured filing system that is easy to use and keeps everything associated with projects associated with the program, in one place for my video projects as shown in the image below.

In my case I have a sub folder named DVD_BD_projects for all VDL editing projects, see image below. Within that are the subfolders you see.

The Master empty project contains the sub folders you see for organising the media, project files, camera media, etc. The camera media are separated by camera so as to avoid potential file name clashes - etc.

The Master empty project is copy and pasted, the copy renamed to the appropriate project eg the Cornwall 2025 Sept folder is one such project, and then populated with the media from the various cameras and other sources.

I use the same folder structure for both my PC and laptop.

What you cannot see in the above image is that these folders are not on my C: drive. My PC and laptop have an additional drive that is my 'Documents' folder.

I would highly recommend using a second large hard drive, for video projects, my PC's is internal and my laptop an external SuperSpeed USB drive.

The folder paths in VDL can be modified to suit as shown below. Note the last item is my preferred image editng software, the default is the Paint app.

Hi

. . . . F:\One Drive\documents\magix . . . .

The software is looking at your default 'Documents' folder which is pointing to One Drive.

Is the F: drive a local hard/SSD drive?

Are you logging in with a Microsoft account or a local user account?

Going back to your comment:

it is necessary that I have One Drive on my PC

I disconnected and uninstalled One Drive on mine, however I can still share files using One Drive by manual upload, but none of my documents etc on the PC are synced to the cloud.

@Verner-Nielsen

Hi

Thanks for the information.

Why VDL creates the folders where it does is because  F:\One Drive\Documents is the Windows default location documents folder. This is normally setup when Windows is first run on a new computer and use a Microsoft account to login and is a controversial imposition by Microsoft.

VDL creating the folders where it does is essential for its operation, you can move them as has already been commented.

If you must use One Drive, then, due to its limited capacity, I would advise the following:

  • Stop One Drive synchronising the Magix folder and its subfolders, see this article for how to do this.

  • Store video, images, audio media, used in your video projects in the Magix folder to avoid them being uploaded to One Drive, video files will fill One Drive quickly, how you organise this with subfolders is your choice.
  • Avoid storing the media files in the Windows Video, Music and Pictures folders.

  • If you need to retain (archive) the Media files and projects use an external hard drive, minimum capacity 4TB to back up to.

Note: The above recommendations are based on the assumption that you are video editing for personal use, eg holiday videos, etc.

to be honest. I can turn off one drive and I will NOT be disappointed. It also said the article cannot be reached. Once i shut it off. do i need to re install anything?

Hi

Thanks for the heads-up on the above link, it is corrupt.

The English version of the corrupt link is here.

I would suggest you back up all the documents that are stored in OneDrive before turning it off and if you uninstall OneDrive.

There are many tutorials on Youtube, Ask Leo is a good channel

@stephen-logsdon - added: I would suggest you continue posting in your topic here. This topic is about Video Pro X.

@Verner-Nielsen the Dansk link now works correctly.

Hej!
