MEP 17+: Video monitor freezes and no section parentheses. "Start" always plays from T=0.

Hi.

MEP 17+   The video monitor plays for first 2 seconds then stalls. Audio plaback continues and cursor track in the timeline, but no vdeo moitor.

Setting parenthesis for a section does not work. Play always starts from start of movie.

I re-installed, even brought file over to another computer but get eh same thing. Is the movie corrupted?

Working with videos imported from GoPro Hero3+ Silver.

If the 'file' was the MVP project file, and you get the same problem on a separate computer (presumably also running MEP 17), then yes, that certainly does sound like a corrupted project. Is the project significantly more than a set of imported video clips? IOW, have you edited, added effects, transitions, captions, etc? If not then the most likely culprit is your GoPro file(s). Have you successfully used these before?

If you suspect it really is the project and not just the source files, then the next step is to isolate the cause. Has MEP 17 has been taking automatic backups with file extension .MV_ This should be the default and is set here:
https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/4019461/MEP2014-Autobackup.jpg

You get to that as shown here:
https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/4019461/MEP2014-ProgramSettings.jpg

The folder in which you'll find those backups is shown under the Folder tab of that same window, in the Project box.

Then you can start MEP 17 and use File > Load backup project... and methodically step back in time until you get a good result, i.e. one that removes the black screen but leaves you with most of your work intact.

If you've already tried that obvious step, have you tried successively roughly halving the timeline and saving as a new project to see if that isolates it?

Failing that (and again assuming that this is not a GoPro issue, best investigated on that forum) then make a small, non-confidential project exhibiting the problem and use File > Backup > Copy project and media into a folder, zip it up and upload it to a host site (I use Dropbox for instance) so that we can see what you mean and maybe try to reproduce it.

Hi

In addition to Terry's suggestion - what is your computer specification.

If your computer is not powerful enough it will struggle playing back HD video which gives the symptoms you are experiencing ie . . . . The video monitor plays for first 2 seconds then stalls. Audio plaback continues and cursor track in the timeline, but no vdeo moitor. . . .

. . . . "Start" always plays from T=0. . . . .

Open the programs settings option (Y key) and on the Playback tab there is an option Spacebar stops at current playback position - check this then when you use the Spacebar to stop / start playback it will continue from where you stopped

Thanks for your replies.

Terry, good to know about the backups. I went back through them and did find a backup where the section range & monitor worked correctly. However, it was pretty early in the process so I've lost a bit of work.

Movie is made up of sequences of animated stills, GoPro video (shot at 60fps) which has been trimmed, titles, music, etc.

John, I had already found the spacebar check box and had it checked. Doesn't help.

Well, I'll go back and start again. Probably increment filename regularly and increase the number of auto backups it holds. Hopefully avoid this problem a 2nd time.
