MEP 18 - Using 'Pre-Editor' to trim a wav file?

CarpentersMate wrote on 5/5/2019, 12:49 AM

Hi Gang - I noticed MEP has a handy bracket tool for manipulating large wav files before dragging them onto the time line? Would like to ask: is that what the bracket tool is used for? If you highlight the file (float the curser) you'll see the tiny bracket appear directly to the right of the file. It appears as though you can set the 'in and out' points for a particular section of that file before dragging the entire file onto the time line?

Thank You

@CarpentersMate

Hi,

See my tutorial on Basic Editing. First use of the brackets is at about 1:40 in, same with an audio file as with a video clip.

John - thanx for the Tutorial - Unfortunately I'm still using MEP 2018 (haven't recieved 17 yet). I still have one project to finish then I'll scrap 18 in favor for 17. The problem is not knowing HOW the use the brackets - the problem is WHERE is the ICON to drag the edited audio file onto the the 'Time Line?' - Version 2018 has been stripped down: (no more editing wheel etc). I tried repeatedly to look for how/where to drag the EDITED Wav File onto the time line? And BTW (the tiny bracket with playback icon and down arrow) to the right of the actual file, will only bring the ENTIRE wav file onto the timeline (not the edited version).

Thank You (sorry for the confusion)

NOPE 'Automatic Application' - Apparently still doesn't insert the file onto the timeline ...

@CarpentersMate

I don't think that you watched my tutorial. I showed exactly how to do this 2 different ways (there are 3 ways), starting at about 1:40 and going to after 3 minutes. Video or audio, MEP2013 (and probably before) to MEP2019, the steps are identical. Open the file in the monitor, which is now the source monitor, by clicking on either the play button or the brackets on the clip in the media pool. Set the range in the Source Monitor. Either click on the Import button, which you found, or press on the shortcut "1" or drag from the monitor by holding down the left button and dragging from there onto the timeline and then releasing the left mouse button. I show exactly this. Check the length of the range; check the length of the imported clip - they will be the same (+/- 1 frame).

Do not click anywhere else before doing this or the Source monitor and file will lose focus.

Version 2018 is not stripped down. It actually has more features available on the screen.

If you are referring to the jog wheel, then you have one or both of these problems. Either the jog wheel is not turned on (click on the hamburger menu of the Preview monitor), or if it is, then the Preview monitor window is not wide enough to display it, in which case, drag the right side of the window to the right to make the window larger. See at about 1:15 in my second tutorial on Basic Editing:

Hi John - Actually I did watch your tutorial (well done) and thanks for indicating the time.

Since I had a particular problem I only needed to know from 'where' do I drag the files to get them onto the Time Line? I found a solution (depending of course if the library is located in the same folder), I may or may not get the 'Import Prompt'. Anyway this is what's working now:

I don't necessarily have a problem with regard to the loss of the Jog Wheel - I just can't get the darn thing to appear and would rather not screw up the layout I'm currently working on. As for MEP 2018 it may have more features but as I indicated (for my purposes) I prefer MEP 2017 which I'll be using soon.

Thanks Again

@CarpentersMate

Glad you found it. All 3 of the ways that I mentioned should work. Make sure to look at the other import modes as well.

Did you notice that when you import the trimmed audio (or video) the brackets and the length show up at the top of the timeline?

As for the windows arrangements, you cannot screw up the layout. You can have multiple layouts and save each one with a name. The default one always comes back by pressing F9. See below. I have a different arrangement that has the Media Pool full screen and all I have to do is press F10. The next 2 would become F11 and F12.

So go ahead and make the Preview Window wider and save the view under Windows, Window Arrangement, Save, and give it a name.
