Maybe I'm getting old, but I'm sure in recent past versions the keyboard Up arrow started playback. It no longer does that; all it does is stop playback. Is this a bug or by (new/old) design? I see in the MEP 2020 PDF manual, on page 29, that it says it will start playback, with the down arrow pausing playback.
I assume, therefore, it's a bug. Thoughts?

Current keyboard shortcuts for playing the timeline are:
More key board shortcuts are listed in the PDF manual and under File, Settings, Keyboard shortcut where you can also customise which keys are used, eg I have swapped the Object editor and Trimmer Editor and All tracks/Single track mouse mode shortcuts - this suits my workflow better.

Thanks John, I was aware of those but the Up arrow is much easier (especially for us lefties!). I have since checked version 17.0.2.159 on a seldom-used laptop and the Up arrow works as I thought it used to; that version also has the functional fade function in the object trimmer. I'll submit a bug report. Cheers.
The versions of MEP I've used over the years have had inconsistencies about KB shortcuts between the documentation and reality. And between the descriptions from File > Settings > Keyboard shortcut > List and the Help/PDF manual. Your example is one of them, as you pointed out
In MEPP 2016/2017 the Arrow Up/Arrow Down keys do work, although I haven't used them for ages . John's first suggestion, Space, is my usual choice.
OT: One KB shortcut I've just noticed is # which looks handy. Here in 2016/2017 it plays about 10 frames centred on the current one, not as described in the PDF.

There has been quite a lot of discussion on the German forum about this and the opinion is that the up arrow no longer starts playback by design.

OK, thanks guys. I even tried to re-map the up arrow key in the shortcuts. That didn't end well! 😄

Although I can't now find the post I'm pretty sure I raised exactly the same question when VPX 11 was released. I used to find it very easy to use the up- and down-arrow keys whilst editing; the loss of their use is a pain!
But, as @Scenestealer wrote, it seems this change is by design, though I'm honestly not sure why!!!

I have also tried to assign the UP/Down arrow keys and it looks like they are not assignable, however the number pad keys eg 8 and 2 are assignable as shown below for the number pad 8 key.
Amended after Terry's comment below:
The number pad keys 0 - 3 and 7 - 9 are assigned to any function, these are the direct numbers without a Ctrl, Shift or Alt modifier

These are active for me in MEPP 2016 (and I think also 2017):
To next selected object Alt+NumPad '6'
To previously selected object Alt+NumPad '4'
Place key frame NumPad '5'
Jump to next keyframe NumPad '6'
Jump to previous key frame NumPad '4'
