MEP 2013/2014 add-ons; 24 GB?

terrypin wrote on 9/19/2013, 3:43 AM

Are all 15 MEP 2013/2014 add-ons separate programs? Each the same size as the main program?

Or for better quality: https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/4019461/MEP-MultipleInstallations-1.jpg

I would have expected the respective files to be installed but not leaving 15 instances of 1.6 GB programs!

Hi Terry,

Sorry about the length, but I have been trying to sort out all of the versions, files, plugins, installatons, etc., and you opened the door with your query.

Starting with version MX (18), there is a whole series of install/uninstall programs that show up in the Control Panel Uninstall folder for each version. Version 17 only has one file listed as installed. I am carrying 4 versions all still installed. I have not tried to uninstall any of them yet.

The upgrade to version MEP 2014 Plus and the upgrade to Photo Manager 12 put all of the install .exe files into a folder (wrong location for me for some reason - have to be more careful during install because they ended up under New Folder under Independence, installed with Samplitude Music Studio) on my C: drive. See below:

Just the MEP files add up to 4.6 Gb. Since these are all installation programs, I would expect them to show up in Windows Installed Programs which would explain what you are seeing. However, I doubt that there are 14 or 15 times 1.6GB of files in the system somewhere. The above files can be removed (see below).

The MEP manual indicates the following for uninstall (page 11):

If you would like to uninstall MAGIX Movie Edit Pro 2014, go to the Control Panel and
select "Software" or "Programs and Functions". Alternatively go to "Programs >
MAGIX > MAGIX Movie Edit Pro 2014 > Service and Support > Uninstall Program".

However, in Programs.....Uninstall Program, there is only one uninstall program, not 14 or 15.

I believe that the questions are:

  1. Would one have to run each of the uninstall programs to uninstall one entire version of the program?
  2. Does the Uninstall Program take care of all of the others or do they have to be deleted individually through the Control Panel Uninstall?
  3. Are there Magix files sitting in the computer somewhere that are not required once installation is complete that can be deleted? If so, which ones and where are they?

My suspicion is that the Programs ....Uninstall Program only removes the main program and leaves all of the others in case you want to use some of the elements (jpg's, ogg's, wav's, avi's, etc.) with newer versions. I think that these are mostly linked to the files installed in:

C:\ProgramData\MAGIX\Movie Edit Pro 2014 Plus

Thus, I think that the programs and files can be selectively uninstalled.

The previous installations did not leave the same trace on my computer, i.e. a bunch of exe's in the download installations folders, so I don't know where those files ended up. They may have been deleted by the install program. I saw a message in the latest installaton (MEP 2014) that these files would be placed in an installation subfolder and could be moved out and backed up in case they are required for re-installation, so I moved them to another disk drive. These are the files listed above.

Music Maker and Samplitude Music Studio also have many programs registered. PhotoStory has 15. None of these left the install exe files in a folder like MEP did, at least none that I could find, but the result is the same as you indicated for MEP. I suspect that the same condition applies - selective uninstall.

I checked the uninstall programs and they are under the folder:

C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\MAGIX Services\Uninstall

The grand total for the Uninstall folder and subfolders is 240MB, so again, I wouldn't worry about instances of 1.6GB. None of the exe files are very large, but I noticed that there were about 14 folders to uninstall version 14. One of them contains the exe:

Movie_Edit_Pro_2014_Plus_en-II_setup.exe

The others all contain the exe:

Videodeluxe20_plus_setup.exe

but the .ini files are all different and appear to correspond to the multiple entries in the Control Panel Uninstall folder.

Again, the question is: does the main exe execute all of the other exe's?

MULTIPLE FILES

On the same train of thought, by keeping multiple versions and having several different Magix programs, we end up with a lot of duplication. Just look at the various files for styles, music, effects, intros/outros, avi's, jpg's, etc., and you will see what I mean. I have many, many duplicates.

Complicating this is not knowing whether or not we have the same features from one version to the next. I noticed differences in Slideshow Music and Soundtrack Maker Styles, amongst others, between version 2013 and 2014. I read in one of your posts that you copied some styles or something from one version of the program to a newer one and had problems. Magix should give us a way to keep track of these features and be able to use in newer versions, any pertinent features that have been abandoned. I don't know if this issue has been raised with Magix. Do you know?

One ray of sunshine, Magix SlideShow Maker 2 was installed only once, and updated with each new program that contained it. Thus there are not multiple versions installed on my machine.

COMMON FILES

Magix creates files under the folder:

C:\Users\Public\Documents\MAGIX\

This would be a good place for Magix to place common files as much as possible, rather that under the programs.

I was looking for the Catooh Soundpools that were installed, and here they were:

C:\Users\Public\Documents\MAGIX\Common\Soundpools

along with MxSynth. However, the Bonus Pack 2014 that I was with MEP and downloaded separately, has no indication that I could find as to where to put the files or how to integrate them into MEP. So I put them under this Common folder and linked it to the Media Pool in MEP.

All that Magix used this folder area for was Documentation for all of its programs:

C:\Users\Public\Documents\MAGIX\Movie Edit Pro 2014 Plus\Documentation

Seems like they could make better use of this area.

Regards,

John

Hi John,

There's lots to like about MEP but amongst the major criticisms I've made over the years these are the main ones:

1. Poor documentation, Help, tutorials, worked examples, upgrade explanations, etc.. Partly due to the language problem, but...

2. Inefficient use of storage, especially for those of us who rretain many versions. (One of the central points of your post.)

3. Poor bug fixing performance. I've formally reported over  a hundred, probably since MEP 11,  and I reckon many are sill present in 2014.

4. Too many new versions! And that's probably where most of the company's limited resources go, hence points 1/2/3.
