Thanks Ray, I forgot to mention I did that as you suggested on the other thread. I got everything uninstalled using the Microsoft Fixit thingee and re-installed MEP 2020; unfortunately due to the dubious (I would categorise it unethical) Magix update policy, the download is only the initial version (19.0.1.23). So I am now two bug-fixes behind. The initial version doesn't continually restart with the failing Updater, but it hogs my CPU for 3 minutes on MEP startup (which is consequently is unresponsive for that time). That wasn't occurring before, so I suspect that the 49 or 58 updates fixed that, not that I can get them.

This whole thing very frustrating and quite frankly disappointing. I'll contact Support re this.

Wasn't that the store content and MEP housekeeping problem?

If so is there a chance that will settle down over time?

I honestly can't remember. I should keep a diary on such things.

I do agree about the patches policy though. We at least deserve a properly working version and patches are only updates to rectify prior problems that should not have been there in the first place with its release, so should be available for that version especially if it was available during the initial update period.

Just in case anybody is interested, I've can confirm that the problem only happens when Video Mode is set to Compatibilty. All is well when Standard Mode is checked.

That's with my system anyway - as described in my signature.

This worked for me too. In Compatibility mode, continual restarts. In Standard, no restarts.

I got rid of the confounded Update Service that never updated itself by killing it with Microsoft Fixit.

I'm still one update behind (19.0.3.49 verse 19.0.3.58) but at least MEP isn't going berserk with my AVIs after the rollback.

Now, back to editing...

Insanity surpassing the previous:

I used the Microsoft Fixit program to remove the continually-reappearing/never-installing Magix Update Service program, and have now lost the icons on the Effects tab. Crazy.

Did you use the Fix it tool after re-installing MEP?

I wouldn't think that is a good idea. are the bits you removed still in the Recycle bin? Could you put the files back? Try one at a time?

@CubeAce Ray, I did use the Fixit app because I couldn't otherwise stop or uninstall the Update Service app. It's not listed in Programs and Features.

I didn't try re-instating files. I might have a go at that later.

I have rolled back to a previous image and will just have to put up with being nagged each time I start MEP. I've raised a ticket with Support.

The Update Service is not uninstallable as this is what the program uses to check and inform you of updates/patches.

The program which pops up the 'News' items is Magix Cloud Import, previously known as Update Notifier (which is where the confusion may be), Magix Connect and Magix Network Sync.

The current Magix Cloud Import does not appear to work, either from within MEP/VPX or as a standalone.

It seems to me that you are trying to outsmart the program and, in doing so, just creating more problems for yourself.

I have had restarts of previous versions MEP and VPX both after closing the program and upon turning on my computer. It lasts about a week and then magixally goes away. AFAIK, this is because the program was still open in the Background process when the computer is shut down. This is remembered and opens MEP/VPX upon restart. MEP is probably populating the Filecache of the Shop Manager and never finished. Reinstalling or rolling back MEP just restarts the issue. Live with it for a week. Don't reinstall or roll back MEP. This has not happened to me on either of my computers with the latest version of MEP2021 and VPX12. It was prevalent with the previous versions - MEP2020 and VPX11.

The Update Service thing needs updating once in a while. When the message pops up, accept the update on both screens. Nothing else happens on your screen - the Update service app is actually installed or updated. If you don't accept it, it will keep coming back. So don't mess with it.

The Update Notifier that John EB mentions can be removed, but I recommend that you keep it. Under Info Channel, disable everything for which you don't want to receive pop up message (adverts) at the bottom right of your screen when you boot your computer.

You may want to upgrade to VPX11 cheaply by getting the Humble Bundle - 9 days left.

Thanks John, the restarting was fixed by changing the Preview Video Mode from Compatibility mode to Standard; I doubt if that has anything to do with the Shop Manager. I did check running processes at the time; after I closed it, there appeared to be nothing MEP/Magix-wise running, but then VideoDeluxe exe would appear and up started MEP again.

Re the Update Service Updater, I did accept it and let it run. It still came back on a restart of MEP. Support is going to send me 3 files which apparently should be updated by the updater but in my case aren't.

I wonder if these issues were addressed by the 19.0.2.58 update...
