MEP freezes, and often crashes the computer as well...

Gabriel-Lanyi wrote on 9/5/2020, 6:31 AM

I just purchased Movie Edit Pro, and it freezes. At times, after a few minutes it comes back to life. Then it freezes again and stops responding, and I must close the application from the Windows Task Manager. And finally, it completely crashes the computer, so that the WTM doesn't come up anymore and I must do a hard reboot. (I know it is not a question of patience, because I left it overnight in this mode.)
Note that I also run Video Pro X on the same computer, and after I reboot the same project will run find on Video Pro X, but it freezes on Movie Edit Pro.
I'm running MEP under Windows 10 on an Intel core i7 NUC, with its built-in graphic processor and audio card.
Thank you,

Gabriel

Hi Gabriel.

I'm not sure you can open a VPX project successfully in MEP. If you have applied any effects in VPX they may not be available in the same configuration within MEP. If you start a project in MEP it can be opened by VPX but not the other way around. You could save it with a new name to be opened in VPX only and leave the MEP version alone I think. I'm sure If I'm wrong someone will correct me but I can't do that in similar programs where some of the effects are either missing or different versions of the same plug-in.

I've had a second thought.

My system just Crashed MEP as well. It was caused by Windows Update needing a file MEP was using.

That's never happened to me before. Check your Windows update to see if you have just had an update or one is waiting. I think the file in use was called something like 'Windows Text', plus something or other.

Hi Ray,

Thank you for your answer.

1. Actually, the project that crashed MEP was initially created in MEP, but eventually I was able to complete it in VPX.

2. What you say about Windows Update is particularly infuriating because I've been battling Windows Update for years trying to disable it without success. There is ALWAYS some update waiting or completing, and it is impossible to get away from them. I even have an application that is supposed to disable it, but it doesn't seem to work.

3. The truth is that VPX also has a tendency to crash, but not quite as often as MEP. Just after I posted this notice VPX crashed and -- which it seldom does -- issued a crash report. I saved it and I'm considering sending it to Magix Support to see whether they can learn anything from it.

Thank you for your time,

Gabriel

I'm considering sending it to Magix Support

Can I recommend you do so? Only be receiving and reading actual crash reports can the developers gain any insight into what is actually happening on users' computers.

Hi Gabriel.

I think there will possibly be a few update patches for MEP 2021 as I find it not as stable as MEP 2021 even though it is smoother in operation. This is the first version of MEP 2021 released so I would hope so.

Awaiting Windows updates really should not interfere with MEP running but that could be at the Windows end of that particular update or it may have been coincidence. Funny it was my first corruption of a MEP 2021 project and I hate coincidences. Particularly when I had opened Task manager and saw a link to the Windows app connected to MEP running after MEP had 'crashed' but was still showing up as an inactive residing program with connections to the Windows app in question. Other parts of Windows became inactive, such as the Windows start button until I used Task manager to end task at which point the offending Windows app also disappeared as linked to MEP and Windows functions resumed.

Some apps would launch during this problem like paint but OBS studio wouldn't. Baffling.

I would have preferred to restart Windows than end task on MEP but couldn't at that point, so elected to end task of MEP and then restarted Windows. Then applied the Windows update and then restarted MEP.

I haven't a clue as to why these things happen or what the processes are.

I can only on occasion report on them when they seem relevant.

Thank you for your notes.

When MEP crashed I didn't even have the option of ending the task. Ctrl-Alt-Del wasn't taking. I had to hard boot the computer.

Yes, I will upload the crash report to Magix support. I wouldn't be surprised if it were entirely Windows related.

Thank you,

Gabriel
