MEP/VPX Font is not Arial

browj2 wrote on 4/27/2019, 5:15 PM

Here is a strange one. At one point, I changed the default title font to something other than Arial, but only in one version of MEP. I changed it back to the default. However, in all my versions of MEP, VPX and even PhotoStory, the default font shows up as something other than Arial. See the image. I can select Arial but it gives the font shown. I checked in Windows Fonts and Arial looks fine.

If I click on Bold or Italics in the Titling interface, I get Arial. Removing Bold or Italics goes back to the strange font.

Arial works fine in other programs, like Vegas and Pinnacle, but not in the Magix programs. It works fine on my laptop.

Does anyone have any idea as to what could be causing this? Is there some common title font or tfx file that could be causing this?

Thanks,

John CB

Hi guys,

Thanks for taking a look. As I mentioned, this started when I changed the default title font about a year ago, but only in one product. I am sure that I changed it back as I had saved the title.tfx with another name and then changed it back. However, I am dumbfounded as to why this happens on all Magix (except Vegas) video programs, even old ones.

I don't know if this happens in MEP or not but Photoshop uses the windows fonts area to retrieve, store and add fonts to. Perhaps you have somehow managed to change a Windows registry entry somewhere or linked a dll.?

I don't have this problem in other programs, only MEP, VPX and PhotoStory. Arial works fine elsewhere.

It just took a turn for the worse. The program fonts on the Burn screen are now the same wrong font (Permanent Marker), in all three programs.

Arial title is arial in Music Maker.

There must be a common title font file for video programs being used somewhere.

Any ideas?

Thanks,

John

I checked John, and all fonts are stored in the same folder for all programs that run within Windows and show up in that folder. Every program that runs within Windows that needs them should have access to any of them.

So it's either a Magix problem as it seems common to all your Magix programs or it's a Windows problem.

If it were a Windows problem I would suspect it would affect other programs such as paint or any program you can change fonts from within. I would check those as well to see if they suffer the same problem to narrow it down.

It sounds like a corrupt dll. to me but I have no idea how to rectify that offhand. Sorry.

Just a thought, could there be a font in the directory shown by @CubeAce named "Default", "Magix Default" or "Video Default" etc. that holds the default font used by Magix?
So when another font was set as default, this was copied to this font, but when Arial was reset to default, it failed to copy (overwrite) Ariel font to this. This would suggest that Magix uses a "Magix default" font when no font has been selected, or when the default (Arial) is selected.

Thanks for looking.

As I indicated, it works fine in Music Maker for a title - Arial regular shows up correctly.

I also tested text in Xara Designer Pro X and Arial regular shows up correctly.

I can't see anything wrong with Arial in Windows Fonts.

Take a look at my video in one of my posts above. You'll see that on a title in the video editor, the Arial that is actually Permanent Marker, switches to Arial Bold if I click on the bold button. Very strange.

Even more strange, is that it affects the Burn screen user interface.

Hi John

. . . . in all my versions of MEP, VPX and even PhotoStory, the default font shows up as something other than Arial . . . .

I am puzzled that changing the font in one program affects the others, each has its own title.tfx file, there is nothing in the Common folder which, AFAICS, would cause the issue.

  1. If you right clock the title on the timeline, which folder is the object located in and what is the name of it? eg in MEP 2019 the path and name is

    C:\ProgramData\Magix\Movie Edit Pro Premium\2019\Titles\standard\title.tfx

BTW if you remove the title.tfx then, in my case the title picked up the last custom one I made, however only in MEP, VPX and Photostory were not affected.

  2. . . . . I changed the default title font to something other than Arial, but only in one version of MEP. I changed it back to the default. . . . .

Did you save the template again replacing title.tfx

If not then try making a backup copy of the title.tfx file, then add the default title to the timeline, edit it to ensure that Arial is displayed correctly and then save this as a title font replacing title.tfx

  3. Have you tried resetting the program settings? If not make a backup copy of the ini file and then do a reset and close the program and restart it - if the font now behaves as normal, you can use NotePad++ to compare the 2 ini files to see what changed.

If that does not work you can replace the ini with the backup copy to restore your custom settings etc.

Failing any of those I am stuck 😕

Before changing the template font to Permanent Marker a long time ago, I copied and saved the default title.tfx with a different name. Then I changed the font to Permanent Marker and saved that as a template, subsequently changing the name to title.tfx. I have since changed back, but Arial always shows up with the font for Permanent Marker. I didn't change the title.tfx in MEP (or maybe I did) or PhotoStory (definitely did not), so how could they have this same problem?

In VPX today, I changed the title.tfx font to Raleway medium, 24, and the default title works fine. But the user interface on the Burn screen still shows as Permanent Marker. How could the Burn screen interface font change?

If I insert a title, the font shows up as Raleway 24. If I change it to Arial, it shows up as Permanent Marker; click on the Bold button, and Arial Bold shows up.

Why this affects only the Magix Video programs, I have no idea. Somewhere, Windows or the video programs became corrupt. But how and where I have no idea. I'll investigate removing and reinstalling Arial in Window Fonts.

Failing that, I'll raise this with Magix.

Edit: I just checked Arial on a title in Vegas Pro 15, no problem; Arial shows as Arial.

Thanks,

John CB

Hi John

The behaviour you are getting is strange - as there appears to be no common connection that specifies the fonts used - unless it is the common cache file(s) in C:\ProgramData\MAGIX\Common\Cache that is causing the issue.

Hi,

This problem still seems to be there or has come back. In VPX11, 17.0.2.44, the Burn screen, almost all of the text is the wrong font, including the text on the tabs and under Disc options. The title on the screen, "2019-10-02," is supposed to be Arial and that is what is indicated when I open the properties and the font.

However, the font of the Menu entry properties interface are correct. Very strange.

I noticed that one other user reported a similar problem with the default font of the title editor being something other than Arial when Arial was the chosen font. There is no way to actually get the correct Arial to show up. I think that I'll raise a ticket about this.

"But wait....there's more!"

TomFFM and others on the German Forum reports the following since the .44 patch:-

And already the first problem, which is reproducible on 2 computers. The irises (ie. transitions) do not behave properly anymore. In this case, for example, the "Basic effect screens". If I take a text and want to hide it with the "Blur counterclockwise" effect, the text is normal at the beginning and as soon as the effect starts, the text is displayed 10 times larger and the effect starts. But not correct either. Some screens do not work ... Can someone reproduce that? Annoying, since I just used these screens for a movie and before everything worked perfectly ...
