MEP will not open after activation of third party plugins

kate-m wrote on 1/23/2022, 11:33 AM

Hey everybody,

with my purchase of MEP in 2020 i received several third party plugins. So yesterday i activated the NewBlue Titler Pro 6 and the NewBlue Elements 3 Ultimate directly via the Movie Edit Pro Premium interface under 'Help'> 'Activate content pack(s)'. Then i restarted my computer, but it couldn't not open Movie Edit Pro Premium. So i shut down my computer again and restarted it, but it will not open MEP. Now i wonder if i should download Movie Edit Pro Premium anew from the link i got in the email when i bought it back in 2020. But i have projects i'm working on and i hope i can still open and work on them again?

What to do?

Any ideas?

Thanks :-)

Kate

Hi Kate.

I think you have basically run of of ram.

The Magix site said you needed a minimum of 4GB to run Movie Edit Pro and advised you would need more.

Minimum system requirements

Processor: 2.4 GHz

RAM: 4 GB or higher

Graphics card: Onboard, min. resolution 1280 x 1024, 512 MB VRAM and DirectX 11 support (recommended: Intel Graphics HD 520 or better for MPEG2/AVC/HEVC) INFUSION Engine 3 supports video acceleration for AVC and HEVC on Intel,

NVIDIA or AMD GPUs with 1GB VRAM or higher Example: Intel Graphics HD 630, NVIDIA Geforce GTX 1050, AMD Radeon RX470

Available drive space: 2 GB for program installation Internet connection: Required for registering and validating the program, as well as for some program features. Program requires one-time registration

Those specifications are to be able to just run Movie Edit Pro. There is no mention of how adding third party plugins will affect those requirements.

New Blue Titler Pro requirements.

New Blue Elements 3 Ultimate requirements.

When you add third party effects to MEP it will initialise them ready to be used in the program. At that point they may not be using the full amount of available resources as they are just idling, doing nothing, but they will increase the amount of ram needed so they can be loaded, ready for use. Possibly even loading some elements into vram on the graphics card as well. Although the option to use a GPU can be turned off, to do that you need to be able to load MEP.

On my system, with the minimum amount of programs I feel I need on startup, just starting Windows 10 uses up the following amount of ram. The second image is just loading MEP. Finally the third image is a project loaded into MEP.

Note that opening MEP loads just above 4GB of memory. My guess is before you loaded the extra plugins that MEP was loading just under the 4GB of system memory you have.

You could use Task Manager to try to disable startup applications you don't need to reduce the amount of ram used when you start your computer and see if that leaves enough ram available to at least initialise MEP.

Then you could try disabling the need for the effects to use the GPU before trying to use them.

That may make the whole program unusable when trying to use those effects as switching the use of the GPU to off also loads more of the effect directly to motherboard ram instead.

Just hitting the play button loads even more data to system (motherboard) ram when such effects are applied.

I think you have two main choices.

Either uninstall the third party effects or upgrade your entire system.

Unless someone else can offer a solution.

Increasing virtual ram in my experience never works as a solution to this problem and I personally don't think 8GBs of ram is even sufficient to run some of these plugins, nor is 1GB of vram on a third party GPU. I've been there and failed.

You can try running Task Manager for yourself to see if my findings are correct.

Ray.

Hey Ray,

thanks so much for your quick answer and your great help :-)

My friend will help me find different parts, as i buy a new computer starting of today :-D

What would you suggest that i get, so i can run everything and more to come in the future? For it is possible to employ all the great effects and then upgrade MEP etc. to achieve best results with my green screen film?

Thanks again :-)

@kate-m

Hi Kate. I would go for an Intel GPU with an inboard GPU.

I don't personally think at this point it has to be the latest generation of chips and an eight, ninth, or tenth generation chip at this point and at least an i7 as that seems to be the best sweet spot between cost and performance. Not having the latest generation of CPU will save money on other components such as ram and motherboard costs. That will give you Intel HD 630 support and leave more money for a better nvidia card with at least 4GB (preferably 6 or 8GB if you want better performance) Plus at least 16GB of ram. I say 16GB, but I often get my machine using up to 24 GB of ram using third party effects. I have also used 16GB sticks so I could double the ram later if needed. You don't have to buy the fastest DDR4 ram but first look at the fastest ram the CPU can handle which may be a much lower speed ram. That again will save some costs, spent better elsewhere such as a decent power supply which I would say get at least a 650w or higher. Don't cheap out on power power supply or any component as cheaper versions often have the habit of breaking down. Then if possible a motherboard that supports at least 2 M2. or NVMe drives. Get the best performing drives you can afford. My C: drive is only a 250GB drive but I don't run that many programs. You may want 500GB or larger. I use my second SSD for current projects I'm working on only. Other drives are for archiving and any files I may want to reuse.

No matter what the power of the computer, you may get to a point where the need to use proxy files or other means to keep the project running smoothly except perhaps on a machine using better components and maybe after another couple of yearly releases of the program you will have to decide whether to stick with the last version you are using or upgrade the machine again. Also make sure your new build will be Windows 11 compatible and that any hardware supports Direct X 12.1 to cope with the next set of upgrades that may come along.

Last but not least get a decent CPU cooler and a case with enough air flow and air filters. If you can keep your CPU under 65℃ under full load it will last much longer. Decent ones can be found reasonably cheap.

Motherboards. Just make sure they have enough connectivity for your needs. I have always used ASUS but other mainstream manufacturers all have their good points. Gigabyte is another good manufacturer as are ASRock and MSI. Also check which ram modules are compatible and have been tested by the manufacturer and that you have the correct socket set for your selected CPU.

So in order for things to look for I would start with the CPU, then motherboard, ram, third party graphics card. SSDs, power supply. CPU cooler (and take measurements and make sure the case is big enough to house all the components.)

Some people may say a third party GPU is not necessary and can be added later ,but I would say not if you are after using some of the third party effects and expect smooth playback. That can be difficult enough with the correct hardware depending on how complex a project you make.

Ray.

No problem.

As for green screening, The system should cope easily processing wise. Getting the green screen working well, that's another story.

Kate-m, just a thought, do you happen to have any earlier versions of Titler Pro installed, I have had that issue and was advised by New Blue that if I wanted Titler Pro 6 installed, I should uninstall any previous versions, in my case NBTP 5, which fixed the issue, unfortunately, that corrupted my other NLEs, which needed NBTP 5, so I had to uninstall 6 and reinstall 5
