MEP2015 Premium - Mute problems, audio video objects out of syn

browj2 wrote on 2/11/2015, 6:15 PM

I have noticed a few things about MEP2015 Plus/Premium that I would like confirmed.

1. Mute

According to the manual and the mouseover help on the M at the left of a track, arming M should mute the audio. As in MEP2014, it turns off both audio and video. Run the mouse over the M to see: "Switch on/off audio on track..."

In the mixer, I thought that muting a track would mute only the sound. It doesn't, it turns off both audio and video. This is annoying.

In MEP2014, when I mute an audio track in the mixer, the M at the left of the track shows up right away.

In MEP2015, after muting in the mixer, the M does not show up until I pass my mouse over top of the M buttons at the left of the track.

Could someone please confirm these?

What this means is that the audio only cannot be muted on a track that has video/audio on one track (the default case). The audio has to be split onto a second track, say track 2, and one must be very careful to not have anything else on track 2, like a title on a photo.

In VPX6, there is no problem. There is a button to "mute" video, and another one to mute audio.

2. A/V objects out of sync

See the image below.

I separated A/V onto 2 tracks (Ctrl+H). They are still grouped together. I have managed to get the audio and the video object out of sync by using mouse mode for a track (8). It doesn't happen right away and I don't know exactly when it happens or what causes it, but it could be related to having another object, not audio on track 2, like a title linked to a photo that was ungrouped, and then moving objects around on track 1 eventually causes strange behaviour on track 2.

Has anyone noticed this?

I ended up ungrouping and deleting most of the audio parts that were out of sync; didn't need them anyways.

3. Mixer problem 1 with FX

On a track in the mixer, I clicked on FX. This opens the Audio FX screen with 3 tools, 10 band EQ, Reverb/Delay, and Compressor. Nothing can be done in any of these and the only way out is Escape. This also happens in VPX6, but does not happen in MEP2014Plus.

Confirmed?

4. Mixer problem 2 with FX plugins

In the mixer, on a track, adding a plugin below the FX - Auto buttons actually does nothing that I could find, until one of the sliders below them is used. After sliding a slider to the right, and FX track opens up at the right of the Mixer, just to the left of the Master. I added 2 plugins and moved the sliders.

However, slider 1 (upper) seems to correspond to the second or lower plugin, and slider 2 to the upper plugin. I think that Magix has these the wrong way around. I will check this in Music Maker to see if it is the same.

Confirmed?

5. Mixer problem 3 with FX plugins

Once a slider has been moved as above, the first one shows up in the FX channel at the right of the mixer. The FX button is lit up. Clicking on it opens the Audio FX tools. I can't turn it off.

The second FX channel corresponding to my second slider, I presume since the second slider is almost at full and it corresponds tothe volume of the FX channel, has the FX button turned off. Clicking on the FX button opens the Audio FX tools, but nothing can be done in them. The only way out is Escape, and the FX button light, although it lights up at first, goes out, and stays out.

The only FX button that works is in the Master channel.

Confirmed?

6. Audio from track 1 that used to be on track 2 but deleted, can be heard and seen in the mixer, but there is nothing on the timeline.

I ungrouped and deleted the audio on track 2 that was with the video on track 1. Somehow the sound still shows up in the mixer. I got rid of the sound by sliding the volume slider of track 2 to the bottom in the mixer. Still, there should not have been any sound at this location, except on track 5.

Confirmed?

7. Related to 1 and 2 above - I also somehow ended up with Audio on track 3 grouped to the Video on track 1. Not sure how this happened.

This probably cannot be replicated. I tried by adding a title to a video that did not have audio separated, and the title went to track 3. I moved it to track 2, did a Ctrl+H, audio went to track 2 and the title moved to track 3.

Anyone find this problem?

Thanks,

Just reinstalled and updated MEP2015 Premium and my problem 3 is still there; can't do anything to the Audio FX when going through the Mixer FX button.

Hi John CB

I can replicate some of the 'issues' you are having :-

1.   Mute

. . . . What this means is that the audio only cannot be muted on a track that has video/audio on one track (the default case) . . . .

It can be muted - right click - Audio functions, Mute audio object.

With respect to the track M button I think the mouse over message and manual are in error - AFAICS the track mute should mute everything on that track. Unless of course there was meant to e a second

2.   A/V objects out of sync

I rarely use the track mouse mode (8) - I only use the Single object (6) and All tracks (7) modes.  However I have had similar issues to yours.

3.  Mixer problem 1 with FX

Definitely works for me and the close button works - here is a screen shot of it applied to an audio object on a track

I assume you are clicking the on/off buttons to the left of the effects panels.

4.   Mixer problem 2 with FX plugins

Can only confirm that nothing happens clicking the dropdowns - do not get anything happening when move sliders - no effects installed?

5.   Mixer problem 3 with FX plugins

Cannot confirm - see 4

6.   Audio from track 1 that used to be on track 2 but deleted

Not confirmed - no sound heard after deleting audio.

7.   Audio track 3 linked to video track 1

Cannot replicate

Hi John EB,

Thanks for looking at these. Still having the same problem in both 64 bit programs with the mixer.

I installed MDynamic EQ (trial but fully works) and was able to add it to the track in the mixer and get it to work. The sliders appear to do nothing, and there is nothing showing up in the FX channel - no sound, nothing.

I tried the EQ in MEP2014Plus and it works beautifully, as does Variverb II which I also have. Variverb II doesn't work in VPX6 and 2015Premium mixers. EQ seems to, but again, nothing shows in the FX channel. You must have something different on your system.

For the out of sync audio problem that I posted in the other thread, I managed to replicated it in MEP2014. Just noticed this. See the dual image below. I had AV on tracks 1. Nothing on track 2 for the first object, a Xara mask on track 2 starts at the second object (of track 1). Using Ctrl+H to get audio on separate tracks, the Audio of the first object on track 1 went to track 2. Then Ctrl+H on the second track 1 object caused the audio to go to track 2, as is normal, but the audio from the first object got pushed down to track 3.

Still trying to replicate the other problem where the audio parts go out of sync horizontally.

Thanks,

John

More tests.

Retried the Mixer today in 2015Premium.

I added Variverb and MDynamics to the 2 slots on one track. The MDyEQ seems to work fine, no need to move the sliders. But Variverb, for which I am supposed to have the full version of, did nothing. Moving the sliders causes the 2 FX channels show up at the right, and today I was getting sound on the monitors of the FX channels. However, I was getting a big reverb on FX1.

I noticed finally that under the presets in Variverb, at the bottom, there are 2 choices, Activate Variverb II, and Buy Variverb II. Somehow I lost the activation; maybe when SMS2015 uninstalled 2014. Anyway, this was annoying and I managed to reactivate it.

The FX button was lit up, so I clicked on it and the Audio FX tools came up with Reverb turned on. The reverb that I was hearing was coming from there, not from Variverb. Still can't touch anything in the FX audio screen and have to Esc to get out of the screen. Strange.

I noticed in 2014, that even if no plugin is in the mixer, moving the first slider activates channel FX1, the FX light is on and clicking on it shows that Reverb is turned on. I can turn it off or change the parameters in 2014, but not so in 2015 or VPX6.

Strange that the slider is connected to reverb that is turned on by default in Audio FX's linked to FX channel 1. Did you see if this is documented anywhere?

I can recommend MDynamic EQ. It's on sale at 50% off (40$) this week only. It was recommended on the Samplitude site. Magix should have these features in the EQ's - Analyzer and Sonogram. Try out the trial to see how it works. Here is a screen shot with the deEsser preset and the Analyzer and Sonogram turned on. There is much more flexibility in shaping the EQ curve.

Thanks for telling me about turning off the sound. I could only do this by object, which is good. Adjusting the mixer volume to 0 turns off the volume on the track. In MEP2015, right-click on an audio object, Set volume, last one on the list is "Sound off." Same path for "Sound on." I couldn't find the Audio functions, Mute audio object. I guess that it was changed.

Regards,

Hi John CB

Sticky has been updated.

Have tested the MDynamicEQ on an Alphorn video I made at Christmas - just spent £25 !

What a difference it makes compared to the standard compressor - compression / limiting yet retaining the rich harmonics and loudness differentials.

Thanks

I've found the Mute (M) buttons to be buggy in both the 2014 and 2015 version.  There are times that I have absolutely no sound even when I have unclicked the mute buttons.  Sometimes pushing the mute button on & off brings it back but often I've had to close the program and reopen it.  Most of my edits are multicam edits so I'm not sure if it's only related to that.

My bigger issue is the constant stutter trying to edit multicam, even with just two cameras.  I never had that issue before and I suspect it's the retooling they did for the new 64 bit engine.  The only way I can edit multicam is to manually scroll along the timeline.  It stutters too much to choose edit points if I just click play.  This is unfortunately so major an issue, I'm considering other software :(

Hi RJ

The fact that closing the program and opening it again helps the problem might indicate you are running out of RAM.

Check Task manager when this occurs and see if you are near your Memory limit.

Also try - Edit>Empty Undo and Memory Cache to free up RAM whilst editing.

Mixer Problem resolved in MEP2015 and VPX

I stumbled across a solution to my problem of the Audio FX not working when opened on a track by clicking on FX in the mixer.

1. With the playback marker above an area on the timeline with no audio, it worked. I did not have to select an object, just place the playback marker. After modifying the Reverb and accepting, it worked on the track, but moving the playback marker to a location where audio exists would still not allow me to modify the reverb or any other FX upon reopening the Audio FX screen from the mixer.

2. Running the program as Administrator resolved the problem. Strange. I had this problem in MEP2015, VPX6 and VPX7, but not in MEP2014 and before, so something changed in the coding.

3. I also had a problem with editing the audio externally. Music Editor 3 would not open. Running MEP2015 as Admin resolved this, but not in VPX6 or 7.

I wonder if there are any more things that get resolved by running as Admin.

@Ss,

Don't think that I have been running out of memory. Problems happen when nothing else loaded during the session. I have 16GB or RAM, and task manager showed only low usage.
