Minor Effects Mask bugs?

jeffjn wrote on 12/23/2013, 11:52 AM

I’ve noticed two anomalies with using effects masks. If we agree that they are bugs, and they haven’t already been reported, I can try reporting them.

1 – When you apply a mask to an effect, it is activated for all the current effects for the clip, but only one mask icon is highlighted. Switch away and back to refresh the display and all the icons are shown as active.

2 – If you add a mask to a clip which has something on the track below, but not starting at the begins of the clip, the mask only extends to the next object. I would have though it should be put on a track that is completely empty for the duration of the target clip

Hi Jeffin

What is the object at the end of the mask - indicated by yellow arrow in image below - it looks like this is stopping the mask.

It's a short sound effect.

If the track below is full, then the program puts it on the next track down. If there are no free tracks it creates a new one.

But if the track is partially occupied over the duration of the clip, the mask doesn't get applied to the whole clip.

Now I look at this again, that's what titles do as well. With a title it's not a huge problem because you aren't expecting it to last the duration of the clip. But with a mask you are normally going to want it to last the whole duration.

So I would have thought that the algorithim should look for a track that it can place the mask on for the whole duration of the parent clip, and if it can't find one, create a new track?

Hi Jeffin

. . . . So I would have thought that the algorithim should look for a track that it can place the mask on for the whole duration of the parent clip . . . .

Masks should be postioned immediately on, above, below or between two video / image objects for which they are to have an effect on as shown below - if they are positioneed on other tracks the effect may have odd consequences - eg affecting the wrong object.

The short audio effect is blocking the mask and making it cut short.  The audio effect needs moving to a lower track - I usually use track 5

What effect are you trying to achieve?

Examples:

Mask on object

Mask between objects

Mask below object

I'm adding a grad to a bit of sky.

| just find the automatic placement of the mask flawed. If it needs to put the mask on an adjoining track and there isn't room, it should create a new track, not put a truncated version of the mask on the track.

Now I know about this flaw, I can look out for it. I won't bother to report it.

The minor irriation of the mask icons is also quite trivial, but are you seeing it to?
