MOV files from CUBE no longer accepted

which has this spec:

is one of many taken with my 'Polaroid' CUBE. (This one is a brief test.) They play OK in my various media players: MPC-HC, VLC, WMP. A week or so ago, they also opened OK in MEP 2016. But now I get error message 'File format cannot be read...'.

In MEP 2017 I get 'Needs Quicktime...'.

In MEP 2014 they play OK.

Three different import attempt responses!

Can't think of anything relevant I've changed in MEP 2016 recently. Did switch from 25 to 50 fps project setting, but reverting doesn't help. Tried copying across previous videodeluxe.ini backups, but the oldest (apart from the 1 kb default) is only 3 days old and didn't help.

I'm working on it but feedback on whether others can import, plus thoughts on isolating and fixing the problem would be much appreciated please.

The most obvious first step proved successful, namely installing Quicktime. The MOV files now open in all three versions.

Which still leaves me baffled about the different behaviour before? In particular, why did MEP 2014 have no problem? (As for 2016, I'm guessing the 'cannot read' message should really have continued '...because Quicktime needed'?)

P.S: When re-testing in MEPP (maybe only an hour after last running it) I accepted and installed the recommended update to version 16.0.4.98 (UDP3).

Hi Terry

I do not have QT installed - in MEP 2014, 2016 and 2017 I get the same message Quicktime not installed with your test video.

However I also checked with some MOV files of mine which has the same video codecs as your sample and that imports fine in all 3 versions.

There are 2 items that are different between your file and mine

  1. Your General codec id is qt 0000.02 (qt) and the audio codec whereas mine are qt 2001.03 (qt  /caqv) or qt 2005.03 (qt  )

  2. Mine have no audio*

* these are video loops that I use for menus etc.

I have taken to converting MOV files to a different format, usually mp4.

Hi John,

Thanks, very helpful.

Very strange that MEP (apart from 2014 in my case, but not yours) appears to need QT.

I'm conscious of QT being distrusted by many so I'd rather avoid it. I'm not keen on a conversion step but if I do adopt that for these CUBE files I take it from your earlier posts that you recommend MovAvi, which I haven't tried?

It's a long time since I used SUPER but used to find that pretty good.

Hi Terry

. . . . I take it from your earlier posts that you recommend MovAvi . . . .

I definitely do, it is customisable, fast and versatile.
