Move object to another track but keep same location on timeline

onlye wrote on 11/19/2018, 12:16 PM

I want to move single objects from one track to another but I want to make sure they maintain their exact location on the timeline. Is there a precise way to do this other than drag and drop and then readjust? Along the same lines is there a way or place in properties to specify the exact location for an object to start?

thanks

Hi,

A1: Hold the Shift key while you drag it.

A2: No.

If you are importing a clip or image onto a track then it is possible to set the time line marker to the position you want the clip to start and then press the import arrow on the clip showing in the import files section. I think this behaviour has to be set up in the settings first though. If you need to change the position of a track already imported onto a track then Terry I think is right as far as I know so far.

To move an object from one track to another whilst maintaining it's position, make sure the mouse mode is set to single object move first, check that object grid is selected, position the time line marker/cursor to where you want the object to start, (see attached pic and red highlights) then simply drag it into position, where it will attach to the marker. If you are simply moving an object to the same vertical position on another track, follow the same procedure, aligning your timeline marker/cursor to the start of the object you are moving.

Isn't there a snap to object start function or similar that helps ?

I am always able to move an object vertically down/up and it's don't seems to shift in time.

Even if it does, I can easily shift it back because the objects align in frame ( 1/24 or whatever second) ( If you zoom in enough)

I think the snap to object is the same icon that I referred to as the object grid icon. If you turn that off or don't have it on, you can drop the object without it jumping to the nearest frame, which wouldn't be what the OP wanted. Happy to be corrected though if that is incorrect .

Ok, Thanks for explaining the icon.

I just like it the way MEP snaps stuffs to the frames, so all medias in different tracks can always be easily aligned once you zoom in enough to see it. 👍

Thanks to all for the responses. The first response from terrypin was exactly what I was looking for. As for the other comments - I learned some good things I did not know.
