Movie Edit Pro 2013 Freezing

wallboy wrote on 10/5/2014, 8:15 PM

Every time I try and edit a short video shot in 720HD it takes me a minimum of 2 hours because the play back is extremely slow and keeps freezing. When I add a fade from one clip to another the video will freeze and jump to the next clip so I can't see if the fade works properly.

I am running the following:

  • Windows 8
  • Intel Pentium CPU B960 @ 2.20GHz
  • Ram: 6.00GB (5.88 GB usable)
  • 64-bit operating system, x64-based processor

How can I make videos playback properly? If playback worked as it should I could make a 5-6 minute video in 30 minutes instead of 2 hours.

Short answer: your computer CPU is, regrettably, nowhere near fast enough to enable you to smoothly edit HD video!

Is your computer actually a Netbook (since I see from a quick Google search that that CPU is often used in netbooks)?

For HD video you really need a quad-core CPU, i5 or i7 is often recommended (yours is only dual-core) and rather slow by today's standards.

However, you should be able to edit your video if you use Proxy files.  These are lower resolution copies of your HD files, created by MEP to allow you to edit smoothly.  When you come to export your footage in its final format the program will use the HD originals as the source, not these lower-res copies, so your exported footage will be as "good as it can be".  I think MEP 2013 can create proxy files "automatically" (or did that only come in with MEP 2014?).  If not, this web page and utility written by Carl (000cpc000) will allow you to create your own proxy files, just make sure you follow the instructions very carefully!  http://000cpc000.plesk4.freepgs.com/MEP_PROXY_UTES/

Thanks :)

I thought it might have been my computer. It is a laptop not a notebook. I knew I should have got an i3 or i5 to begin with, argh.

Unfortunately I am not much of a computer geek so I ave no idea how to set up the proxy stuff so I guess I will have to stick with really slow video editing :(

Yes, it is slightly complicated but Carl (000cpc000) has provided a very full set of instructions on that web page.  If you follow them slowly and carefully you will be able to create the proxy files and so edit more successfully.

Certainly, I think that option is easier/cheaper than buying a new computer!  (And I don't think you need to be a "computer geek" to try it, at least!)
