Yes some of the functions are limited - you can only export a few minutes of video, codecs which are licensed are not included.

The most important feature compared to previous versions is proxy file editing, which, when enabled, gives smoother previews on lower spec computers for HD video.

Even without using the Proxy feature I find that 2014 previews AVCHD 50p footage much more smoothly with the "Enable smooth playback" (P key) activated. This is partly a result of improvements to the "Video engine" and partly through enabling processing of more of the transitions and video effects on the GPU.

I find the HDR (High Dynamic Range) effect very useful also.
