Movie Edit Pro Crash

Hi Magix users

I've been a Movie Edit Pro user for many years, although I'm definitely not a power user.

Just in the last few days Movie Edit Pro (Premium V. 18.0.2.225 and the previous version) has been crashing on me whenever I try to export MP4 videos (MPG exports are fine).

After selecting "Export" and the necessary parameters in the dialog box and clicking "OK" the "blue circle" appears briefly, and within about 5 seconds Movie Edit Pro shuts down (having created a 0 byte MP4 file) and re-launches.

The size of the project makes no difference. I've imported projects, which previously exported as MP4 files, but now the export crashes.

Coincidentally, my copy of Magix Photostory Deluxe V. 18.1.2.34 does exactly the same thing.

And, coincidentally, I had a Windows 10 update recently.

'Tis a mystery, so any suggestions or settings to check would be most welcome.

Hi Bruce and welcome to the forum.

With Win 10 it is well worth going to the power button and choosing "Restart" from time to time, in case there is a Windows Update that has installed and not restarted. This is different from Shutdown > Start where the PC goes into a Hybrid sleep state instead of a hard reboot.

Also, Windows and subsequently Intel have changed their driver model recently - see this post:https://www.magix.info/uk/forum/possible-problem-with-latest-intel-graphics-driver-25-20-100-6444--1218512/ so it might be interesting to check Device manager to see if the updated DCH driver has installed coincidentally with the start of your problem.

Thanks for the suggestions. However, following every Windows Shutdown I turn my PC off at the power-point, so I get a hard reboot at every Startup.

My Intel graphics driver dates back to 15 August 2018, well before the problem started. In any case the issue identified in the links seems to be around poor rendering of videos. In my case I'm getting a zero Byte mp4 file and a shut-down and restart of Movie Edit Pro or Photostory Deluxe.

I suspect you have misunderstood the differences between a Shutdown and Restart.

Shutting down and turning the power of does not give you a hard reboot on the next start.

With Fast start enabled (the default setting for Windows) the computer will do the following:

Shutdown - save the current drivers states and other Windows parameters to a file on the hard drive and reload these on the next start up.

Restart - does not save the Windows state, restarting then loads all the drivers etc including driver updates afresh, ie it performs a Hard boot. On the next Shutdown the new state is saved to the fast start file. You should notice that the start up process takes longer with Restart.

If you are using the MainConcept codec then there is a known issue when using the MainConcept codec with Hardware acceleration (Quicksync) enabled, however I have never see this shut down MEP.

After restarting the computer, try exporting with HWA turned off in both the program and the Export dialog options Calculate video effects on the GPU and in the Advanced settings dialog.

Thank you so much. Turning off the HWA solved the problem. My projects now render to mp4 (yeah!).

As an aside, do you have any thoughts on what might have changed to have suddenly caused the issue?

"SHERLOCK - The Codec Detective" found a MainConcept MPEG-2 Video Encoder (mcm2ve.ax). However, according to its properties this file was last accessed in August 2018, before the issue started.

Presumably, there are issues with other encoders ...

Hi John EB. I am having the same issue of crashing when attempting to export to mpeg 4. I am not sure I understand your solution and would really appreciate some help. I am not very computer savvy!

What is 'HWA' and how do I turn this off in the programme and the Export Dialog options?

First, please read this post and give us ALL the information requested there. It is entirely possible you have the exact same problem but without all that additional detail it is impossible to be certain and hence to advise you.

It is also entirely possible that you actually have a completely different cause for the problem you are seeing, so, more information please! 😀
