Movie Edit Pro Keeps Crashing

Barry-Cowles wrote on 7/14/2021, 11:27 AM

Hi Everyone,
I hope that someone can help me with this because it is infuruating.
I am trying to load images for a slide show, either by the built in Import or Drag and Drop and the program randomly crashes.
On one occasion I loaded the program, Collected some images to load up and by that time it had hung again.
I have now loaded it to get the version number and it has hung again. Obviously this makes the program totally unusually.
Interestingly it always accompanied by hearing an internal fan that for 18 months, I never even knew that the machine had.
Samplitude 2021 runs without a hitch.

Processor    AMD Ryzen 3 3200U with Radeon Vega Mobile Gfx     2.60 GHz
Installed RAM    4.00 GB (3.44 GB usable)
System type    64-bit operating system, x64-based processor
Pen and touch    No pen or touch input is available for this display

I am running Windows 10, regularly updated on an Acer Aspire 5 with an AMD Ryzen Processor.
Movie Edit Pro Premium Version 19.0.2.58 (UDP3) UH Code 8445 KA2
The Program is installed on a seperate SSD the same as samplitude running via a USB3 Hub.

I do hope that someone can help with this or I will need to abandon the product.
Best regards
Barry

Hi

The laptop specification and the symptoms you describe would suggest Movie Edit Pro (MEP) 2020 is struggling due to the laptop not being powerful enough to run the program smoothly.

Installing the program on an external USB drive is not recommended - USB drives can and do disconnect/sleep resulting in a program crash.

3.2 GB of RAM, with Windows 10 taking about 1/4 of this, is not leaving much for MEP to use.

The ramping up of the processor (CPU) fans is due to it being a dual core processor being worked hard - images are processed by the CPU with no help from the graphics card.

Comparing MEP to Samplitude is not a true comparison, compared to video, audio is very light on processor usage.

IMHO any video editing software is likely to struggle with this laptop.

Many thanks for coming back to me John.
Interestingly, I have just re-installed it onto my C: drive. Ran the program and it said that there were extra's to install, I clicked the button and it hung again. The program was quiet happily running without these problems a few days ago. I then got an update on the program from Magix and Bingo. Here we are.

Hi John and any others that are interested in this topic.
I installed the program on a slightly lower spec Microsoft Surface and it seems to be running fine on that, with the added benefit that it does hardware rendering so it is much quicker in that respect.
I then did a windows 10 reinstall on my Acer Aspire 5 and reinstalled all of my required software and so far it is working fine with the trial version of Movie Edit Pro Premium Version. I am now validating the installation and downloading the extra files. Should there be any further issues, I will update this topic.
Many thanks to John.

Darn it now they have both crashed.

Both computers are within the list Magix Movie Edit Pro Premium requirements.

Any Clues anyone?

Hi Barry.

Try looking and comparing your systems with the advice on this page. If you have any doubts or question regarding the advice given, ask back here for answers. While a validated inboard CPU graphics chip from Intel isn't 100% necessary it does help a lot.

If everything looks good from there for each machine. Come back and I'll try to think of other things that causes systems to crash. There are more than a few.

Hi Ray,
Many thanks for your reply.
I get what the article is saying. My machines are just on or over Mininum System Requirements, so I would at least expect it not to crash on loading without even pressing a button. That does seem somewhat severe. When I do get it to do something, I am just trying to create a Slide Show, using the Wizard.
Any other suggestions other than spending thousands on a new machine will be very helpful.
Best regards again.

Hi Barry.

These are my personal checks. Others may disagree.

First I would check I had enough free space on my C: drive for the program to move files around during reading a project. I like to know I have at least 50GB of free C: drive space although 20GB should be enough.

The main thing though is ram 8GB should be absolute minimum for video editing. Setting up virtual ram will not work as an alternative. Having more virtual ram set up than actual ram is often worse and can cause crashes. Try not to make the virtual ram more than Windows wants to set.

Try setting the power setting for the computer to Ultimate performance. This stops usb ports and drives and other peripherals from going to sleep or shutting down and may interrupt MEP.

Never run a project from the C: drive. Make sure any drive the project is on is fast enough and has a good sized cache. Internal drives are always preferable to external drives. If you have to use an external drive match the usb port to the performance of the drive. Do not connect USB2 drives to USB3 ports.

Remove any GPU game drivers and make sure you only run UHD and / or DCH (or AMD equivalent?) drivers.

In Windows Settings \ System \ Display \ Graphics settings, 'Choose an app to set preference' to a 'Desktop app' and browse and find the Movie Edit Pro exe. file and add it. Click on the resulting icon and choose 'Let Windows decide'.

When you start MEP try setting the program to its default settings.

When you run MEP also run Task Manager and see if there are any obvious problems such as CPU or GPUs running over 90% for long periods.

Keep an eye on CPU temperature and if any drives are maxing out.

See if any of that helps.

Ray.

Hi Ray,
Many thanks for coming back so quickly with this analysis. It is a shame that Magix do not state this rather that saying you can use underpowered computers where mine exceeds their minimum.

I will go through what you have stated here and see if can uprate my ram etc.
Many thanks once again.
Best regards
Barry.

@Barry-Cowles

Hi Barry.

I should have added never use something like an internet hosting site like One Drive to load the files from.

The files will not stream fast enough for the program to use unless you have a Gigabit connection.

These are now more common set up procedures for programs like Digital Audio Editing programs and Photoshop under Windows 10 to get the best performance from CPUs that can handle multi-thread tasks.

Some versions of Windows 10 also missed these Windows updates that MEP relies on to operate. It's rare but worth checking for if everything else fails.

Hi Ray, and anyone else suffering with this as well.
I think that I have found the main culprit so it is one to add your dossier and that is to make sure that Movie Edit Pro does not loose the Focus, i.e. Do not be tempted to run any other programs like a browser or whatever while Movie Edit Pro is running. I have now done several hours editing, creating and rendering on my smallest machine without a hitch. I will not sign this off as a solution yet as it needs a couple of days to be sure.
Once again Ray, Many thanks for your help. You are a star!!!!!

Hi Barry.

Thanks for the feedback.

I forgot to add, try not to run additional programs while waiting if the specs of the machine are close to minimum. It's been a while since I had a computer not exceeding minimum specs. Especially web browsers with multiple tabs open. They are big ram users and pose problems for CPUs that don't have that many cores.

Fingers crossed for you.
