Movie edit pro won't start on 3 different PCs

William-Smith2833 wrote on 9/7/2018, 9:05 AM

I have Magix Movie Edit Pro 2016. Unfortunately, due to the issue, I am unable to find out exact version numbers since I cannot get into the software. I have tried reinstalling multiple times, and nothing has helped. I have the software installed on 3 different computers, and the issue started roughly at the same time on all three of them. When I go to launch the software I get the following error:

I am not sure if I am looking in the right place, but this error does not appear to trigger anything in the Windows event viewer. Here is some more information about my system:

Windows 10 Pro 64-bit

16GB RAM, Core i5 Processor, Nvidia Geforce GT 440 card with most recent drivers - I have tried rolling back to a previous driver, this doesn't seem to make a difference, and as I said this is happening on 2 other systems as well.

Has anyone else run into this issue? If it's happened to me on 3 different computers at 2 different geographical locations I have to believe it's a relatively common problem, but I've found no information searching.

Hi, welcome to the Magix forums.

I have no idea why the exact same problem should be occurring for you on 3 different computers but I have a strong suspicion this may well be directly related to a Windows Update. (One thing your post doesn't tell us is precisely which build of Win 10 you are running.)

However, you say you have tried reinstalling several times but still no joy. This is because the uninstaller built-in to the program does NOT remove ALL the files created on initial installation and use. (It can't because it does not "know" that at least some of them exist!)

So, please follow carefully the procedure in this tutorial to fully uninstall the program. Then reinstall and see whether you are now able to run the software.

Please post back and let us know whether this suggestion "works" for you.

Hi Jeff,

Thanks for that information. I've gone ahead and run through that entire document, and when I reinstalled there was no change - the same error posted above still occurs. My suspicion was also that a Windows update caused the issue, but I assumed if that were the case a lot more folks would be reporting the problem. I did check my Windows build and it is Version 1803, OS Build 17134.228

Thank you again for your help.

Hi again.

I don't have MEP 2016 installed on my PC and I am also not yet on the 1803 version of Win 10.

I think @johnebaker may still have MEP 2016 installed and be running the 1803 build; I'll message him and ask him if he has any ideas to offer. I know that he's said that at least one pre-2017 version will not run for him, either.

yvon you are saying the 2016 version DOES work well with the latest update?

@William-Smith2833

Hi

MEP 2016 runs perfectly on Windows 10 1803 build 17134.228.

The fact that this is affecting 3 different computers would suggest there is something else that is common to all 3.

Have they all been updated to Windows 1803 ?

Are they using the same AntiVirus program?

Has any other change occurred for all 3 computers?

Each computer is using the standard Windows Defender antivirus which is built into Windows 10. They are all 64-bit systems, and they all have the same version of Movie Edit Pro installed. They are all on 1803 - after my first post, I noticed there was a newer release of Windows, so I installed the Aug 30th release which is 1803 build 17134.254, and it did not change anything.

The PCs have little in common other than that. One is my PC at my desk which is what I've described in the original post, the other is a laptop which I almost never use, but when my PC didn't work I went to use to complete a project, and the third is my girlfriend's laptop which I never ever use, but happened to ask her if the program was working when I noticed the other two aren't working - they're not even in the same geographical locations.

**Edit: I should add that I've checked Windows Firewall and MEP 2016 is allowed**

Hi, just a thought, but the License by default is for 2 PCs, so having it installed on Three, could that cause them all to fail?? Have all instances ever worked OK on the PCs before. You can login to MAGIX to check Your License and for which PCs it is registered.

@shgrude My girlfriend's laptop has an installation that's licensed through her own purchase, not mine. There's two different licenses at play here.

Hi,

yvon you are saying the 2016 version DOES work well with the latest update? YES, version 2016 work very nice and stable.

Personally I do not trust the programmers of Magix it is easy to block a program over the Internet and blame it on Windows or the antivirus. First observation, it is impossible to completely uninstall the program because we write in the Windows registers in a particular way so any reinstallation does not work. To continue your work the only solution is to buy an update or another program. Personally I use Magix just for my family videos because my professional videos are made with others softwares (not necessary better) . So you have a choice to waste time or buy.

@shgrude

Hi

. . . .so having it installed on Three, could that cause them all to fail. . . .

When you start the 3rd install it will tell you that no licence is available and to deactivate one of the others.

@William-Smith2833

You can check your licences are active by:

  1. Using a web browser got to magix.com

  2. Click the My Account icon top right of the home page

  3. Login with your email address and password used to register the software

  4. Select My Products

This will take you to a list of you registered products, serial numbers, installer download and indicate their current status and where installed.
