Movie Studio 18 Platinum can not import VEGAS Movie Studio 17 project

zarzash wrote on 8/22/2021, 10:03 AM

Hello,

contrary to what is explained here Movie Studio 18 can not properly import VEGAS Movie Studio 17 projects.
Using a very simple project with only one video/text track and one text track, MS18 looses the text track.
I can not imagine the mess when importing a project with more complex settings.

MV18 is sold as an upgrade to VMS17, and it is not.

Anyone else had this sad and disappointing experience?

Should I forget or my <17 projects?

@zarzash

Hi and welcome to the user to user forums for the non Vegas products.

As MS18 is really a re-badged version of Movie Edit Pro 2021 but with the added but imperfect at present import of earlier Vegas Studio projects, it is possible they know more about it on the Vegas forums than we do. We heard the same, that only the video files at present can be imported and they 'Are working on it'. So I suppose it depends on how long are you prepared to wait.

Ray.

Well, on the Vegas forum they redirect any MS question to here :-)

But your reply gives me the element of response on the extend of the problem.

To be honest I do not think waiting will help. If such a simple import does not work on release one, there is very little chance that my other way too complex projects with filters and effect will be ever properly imported. I think the priority of Magix is its core features and capture Vegas users.

It is really sad that they sell MS18 as an upgrade to VMS17.

It is miss-leading an frustrating.
If I knew I would have to learn a new tool, then I would have chosen another one.

I wish they would not have played the marketing trick to pretend MS18 is a natural upgrade to VMS17 by poping up an upgrade windows in VMS17.

@zarzash

I agree.

It should have been offered as a cross grade to another platform and not an upgrade from your previous version.

They could have just announced that Movie Studio was effectively dead and discontinued but that is not it seems the Magix way. Then they could have just left the offer of the limited time upgrade to Vegas Edit which now appears to be subscription only.

This discussion has happened with various other MS18 users on this forum now. I also think you are correct about complete projects not opening if you have added effects that don't exist in the Movie Studio 18 version.

Personally I think this has all happened because of this Magix announcement as a part of its market expansion plans with Digital China to eventually go subscription based.

This looks more like a dirty trick than marketing. In my case it withdraw all trust in Magix. An announcement on the web is not an announcement. I, as a customer, am entitled to receive a personal email for such major change.

I have asked for a refund. I am not sure if they will agree. I suspect that when you are actively confusing customers (ie to get their payment), you will not accept to give money back.

I may well have moved to Magix MV18 if they would have communicated honestly. But being forced like this does not make me want to remain with them. As I have to learn a tool from scratch I will pick another one and luckily there is quite a few in this domain. And of course you can imagine what I will recommend to my photo/video community when I am asked for advice on which tool to use.

@zarzash

I believe we understand your annoyance/frustration at what you believe to be poor practice by Magix GMBH.

However, as you have been previously advised, these are user to user forums, not a contact for any Magix staff. Hence, there really is no point at all in posting any rant against the company here!

Since there is, therefore, little point in leaving this thread open, I will now close it.
