Moving objects freely

wza22 wrote on 6/17/2021, 3:32 AM

Magix Movie Edit 17.

Problem is that when I move objects i am not to allowed move it where i want on a timeline. It kind a "snaps" on framepoints? which really causes trouble to sync audio for example and it really bothers in every way while editing. Problem started like out of nowhere, but maybe there is some tap that i've accidentally clicked.. And I don't mean that magnet symbol, i'm familiar with that.

Thank you very much for helping out in advance!

@wza22

Welcome to the Magix user to user forums.

Exactly which Magix video product do you have? Movie Edit Pro 17, Movie Edit Pro 2017 or Vegas Movie Studio 17? I rather suspect it might be the latter, in which case you are in the wrong forum! Please read this pinned post and follow the advice given there.

If you do not have Vegas, then please do tell us exactly which release and variant of Movie Edit Pro you do have.

AAProds wrote on 6/17/2021, 5:09 AM

@wza22 MEP will not let you set the edge of an object between frame edges ie you cannot set it at frame 10 1/2. It will snap to frame 10 or frame 11.

VPX may be a different kettle of fish; mind you, one-frame accuracy is pretty accurate when it comes to audio sync.

Thanks for answering!

Ok, I can't recall that it has always been that way... Also i'm not sure that it's one frame we are talking about. Either way there was one project I was working on recently and the gap between where i could put my objects was so big that audiotrack didn't line up neither side on "frame" even close.

I'll take screenshot later, if there is something wrong with settings on timeline.

emmrecs wrote on 6/17/2021, 6:03 AM

@wza22

Thanks for the additional information.

As @AAProds says, you cannot move any audio or video object to anywhere other than the precise frame boundary in MEP. It is a limitation of the software. OTOH, Video Pro X does allow such intra-frame placement but, as Al says, normally single frame accuracy is pretty tight for audio sync, especially at higher frame rates.

What are you needing to sync that single-frame-accuracy is not tight enough?

Yes, but i'm not quite sure that it is on one frame accuracy where it snaps objects. Is there any way to mess up those "frame" gaps, so that they are not 1/24 for example?

And for answering your question, i tried to sync music video, but wasn't able :)

Hi.

If this was from a screen recording it may not be possible depending on the codec and whether the file uses variable frame rate or not. Such files will often not sync once cut.

Ok. interesting.. Well in this case, I made original edit with resolve and then was going to do finishing touch with magix, but simply couldn't get stuff organized.. Now that my blood pressure has stabilized I'll have to take another look with original video from camera..

When you say camera, do you mean a mobile phone camera? That would be my first bet. Possibly iPhone or Samsung? Second bet would be Go-pro Hero 9 or higher.

Samsung nx-300. Also have used gopro hero3.

I've used magix movie edit for years and never experienced this problem until on my latest project.

I've done very much editing with magix movie edit 16 and 17 and I refuse to believe that it's always been like this, that's why i'm very bothered by this also.

CubeAce wrote on 6/17/2021, 7:48 AM

Hi.

It's not always been like this. It has only been like this since phones and other devices have started using variable frame rate recordings using H265 codecs to save space on memory cards. The earlier Go Pro should be fine.

Is the newest magix movie edit like this also, or can I move objects freely?

Big Thanks for the answers!

AAProds wrote on 6/17/2021, 8:08 AM

I'd like to see a screenshot of your timeline showing the two objects you can't butt up together before we go further along the variable framerate path. I edit plenty of phone videos and have not had a problem with joining clips, with MEP 2019 or 2021.

I see from the manual (2015) it only shoots HD (1920x1080) and there's no mention of variable framerates. It almost certainly wouldn't be using H265.

As @AAProds pointed out, your other camera footage should be fine. I didn't have time to look earlier at specs and assumed your were shooting Video with a phone.

Before thinking about upgrading to a newer version of MEP do look up the new system spec requirements.

Only upgrade if you need to. Don't do it just for a free thrown in plugin or two.

Have you changed operating systems? That may well have caused problems with MEP 2015.

Hi

. . . . I've used magix movie edit for years and never experienced this problem until on my latest project. . . .

What changed - eg different camera, camera set to a different record settings? The Samsung camera only records in 1 format MP4 h.264, however I can find no definite information on whether this is Variable framerate or Constant framerate.

We need a MediaInfo analysis of a video clip you are using - post the results from the Text view of MediaInfo

. . . .  I refuse to believe that it's always been like this . . . .

Unfortunately, that is necessary. MEP has always been accurate to one frame for adjustment of the video/audio synchronisation and you cannot change this to a partial frame offset.

The frame offset value in MEP depends on the frame rate of the project ie :-

  • at 25 fps, offset = 40 milliseconds (ms), 1/25th of a second

  • at 50 fps = offset = 20ms, 1/50th of a second.

If the offset you are getting is greater than 1 frame then it is most likely that you have not zoomed in enough on the timeline to see the individual frames.

While you may set the project to, for example 100 fps, the final video/audio offset may be changed depending on the export frame rate and the video format exported to. Different video formats have different methods of syncing audio to video ie time based or frame based, so what works for one export format may not for another.

Well now, this is embarrassing. As mentioned above you can only drag objects frame by frame, that actually is so and checked few of my projects there is xx:23-00 (24fps) and xx:29-00 (29.97fps) projects on timeline..

As told, maybe there was some conflict between project settings on fps and my Resolve *.mov file that I couldn't sync it with my music video project.. I'll keep that fps setting on mind for the next time, but yeah. That was so frustrating at the time and now I feel just stupid.

I clearly have spent too much time on Resolve so I have forgotten the basics with Magix.

I really appreciate all of you helping me out with this one! Great knowledge, and quick response.

Thank You!
