.mp4 import not working

Tuomo wrote on 7/5/2021, 11:51 AM

Hello!

I tried to import .mp4 video (gameplay capture made with Window+G recording).

The video imported without error messages, but was very green and striped. Audio was OK.

I thought that I have to purchase the MPEG-4 codec (4.99€), so I did that via the program and it installed fine, and I selected the new codec to be used in the program settings.

Now when I try to import the .mp4 video, the whole video is just green. So it is worse than before. Audio was still OK.

What can I do? Thank you!

Hi

From the MediaInfo data:

Width                                    : 2 560 pixels
Original width                           : 1 920 pixels
Height                                   : 1 440 pixels
Original height                          : 1 080 pixels
Display aspect ratio                     : 16:9
Frame rate mode                          : Variable
Frame rate                               : 32.079 FPS
Minimum frame rate                       : 8.219 FPS

Maximum frame rate                       : 133.333 FPS

There are a several issues with this video file that would cause the problems you are having:

  1. the video is Variable Framerate (VFR) many video editing programs do not handle VFR correctly - particularly when:-

  2. the framerate range is extreme - from 8.0219 to 133.33 fps - this will exacerbate 1

  3. the capture video is upscaling, this coupled with 1 and 2 may also cause issues.

IMHO the video is unlikely to be rescuable with such a wide framerate range a converter may struggle with it and the result may be unsatisfactory.

For future captures you should capture to the same resolution as the monitor and a framerate of 30 or 60 fps, capture framerate should be set to Constant framerate if possible.

Hi.

The main problem is with this part of the file.

Frame rate mode                          : Variable
Frame rate                               : 32.079 FPS
Minimum frame rate                       : 8.219 FPS
Maximum frame rate                       : 133.333 FPS

None of the underlined above are normal frame rates for video exporting. the file needs to be of a constant frame rate variety. such as below.

Frame rate mode                          : Constant
Frame rate                               : 59.940 (60000/1001) FPS

Unfortunately a lot of game screen capturing software will capture the action frame for frame which varies with the amount of complexity and speed of the action within the game. A video editing program needs to produce a constant frame rate file for general use but can't decide which frames to bin or add when the minimum frame rate or maximum frame rate gets above the selected frame rate for the project. Even the average frame rate of your file (the first line) is not a recognized frame rate for general use. Most common being closer to either 24, 25, 30, 50, or 60,fps.

It needs to be converted to a constant frame rate file with the use of a program such as Handbrake that video editing packages meant for video cameras can handle.

The average bit rate is also rather low. I suspect to cover the times it is running at 133.333fps.

While these programs are good for playback of gaming they are not much use for video editing unless you can get to change the settings to something more applicable to video editing.

Ray.

Hi John.

With such a high frame rate in the capture I suspect he has a gaming monitor with a 144Hz refresh rate.

I agree - Microsoft say the Game DVR should be set to 30 or 60 fps.

@johnebaker @CubeAce @emmrecs

Thank you so much for your help!

I converted the video with Handbrake to 1080/30fps/Constant framerate and it seems to work fine now with MAGIX!

My monitor is indeed 144Hz. I imagined using native Windows capture is bullet-proof but now I learned that maybe a more sophisticated capturing software might be better for my purposes. Or, I just keep converting the captures with Handbrake. I did not know that such a great open-source video transcoder exists. Do you happen to have tips for best free screen capture software?

CubeAce wrote on 7/6/2021, 12:19 PM

Hi Tuomo.

Personally I use OBS Studio but you have to set it up to produce constant frame rate video as it also captures variable frame rate video as default. It's very versatile in all sorts of ways but takes time to learn anything more than basic screen capture.

Hi

If you have a modern Nvidia graphics card you could try the Nvidia ShadowPlay, now called Nvidia Share, you can check you graphics card compatibility here.

I cannot find any information on the Framerate type, the NV software may still capture Variable Framerate, however this can be fixed using Handbrake.
