Have you tried externally converting the footage from the camcorder to a constant bitrate?

What I like to do is convert any footage I’ve imported to match the project and export settings.

Are you still using MEP 2013?

Using a 2 pass check is going to increase calculated exported time considerably and when adding text or effects to any section also increases calculated export time. When you get past any section containing either titling or effects, the calculated export time can tumble during less processor intensive sections but then estimate longer again if presented with another section of effects or titles. This is why it says calculated and not actual. Calculated export times can be considerably longer or shorter than actual time taken.

I have never converted files to a constant bitrate. In fact, I would advise against doing so, as you will be re-encoding the video and inducing generation quality loss.

I would say your slow encoding time is your system. An i5 is not a rocket machine when dealing with 50fps HD. A recent 1920x1080 slideshow at good bitrate was taking me 6 times the length of the show to encode, and that was only using stills.

That said, MEP on my setup is slow as a wet weak when encoding. It's actually 3 times quicker for me to export lossless, then get VideoRedo to encode the movie.

Calculated export times can be considerably longer or shorter than actual time taken.

I agree with Ray here: the calculated times are sometimes off.

Hi Ray,

Thanks for providing me with that information. To be honest, this is the first time I’ve edited and encoded HD video for quite some time, as a lot of my work involves editing standard definiton MPEG-2 content with very little effects. So perhaps the fact that I haven’t done a big edit for a long has made me forget just how long some encodings can take to complete.

The MEP version that I am using currently is 2018 Premium. I am due an upgrade really. I tend to do so every few years.

Hi Jak.

I would strongly recommend not upgrading MEP from your present version with your current computer specs.

As slow as your version may seem, it will only get slower with newer versions of MEP unless the system exceeds the current minimum specs. My system at present doesn't exceed the minimum specs and my export times do not match those mentioned in the publicity blurb. My system is between 10 to 20% slower than that advertised dependent on the complexity of the project and my computer components are only about three generations behind latest offerings.
