Is it possible to select multiple ranges on a single clip ie. apply several 'in' and 'out' range markers to a single clip rather than having to split and cut unwanted sections?
. . . . Is it possible to select multiple ranges on a single clip ie. apply several 'in' and 'out' range markers to a single clip rather than having to split and cut unwanted sections? . . . .
No - there are 2 methods,
Using In/Out points
when viewing the clip from the media pool in the preview monitor, set the first In/out points, drag the video from the preview monitor to the timeline then rinse and repeat.
Cutting clip on the timeline
Put the entire clip on the timeline ensure mouse mode is set to single tarck (shortcut 8)and use the Cut (T), Remove start (Z) or Remove end (U) keyboard shortcuts, positioning the timeline cursor as required.
With the mouse mode in Single track mode as you remove sections the gaps will close up.
Many thanks for the response, and the advice is appreciated. However, what I am looking for is a method of making cuts to the clip / movie shown on the timeline in a non-destructive way, such that playback and rendering moves automatically from an 'out' marker to an 'in' marker on multiple occasions, allowing for convenient, subsequent adjustments to the positions of the markers. Such a function also provides for a speedier workflow if available.
Using the time line method that John EB suggested, it is very easy to reset the cut at a later date by just re dragging the start or end of the cuts to a new position. That method of editing is non destructive as the original full length clip remains on your drive and the timeline cuts are just a playback instruction.

If I understand this correctly, you are assuming that editing the objects on the timeline is destructive to the original source video/images/audio - is this correct?
VPX is a non destructive editor, whatever cuts etc that you make on the timeline do not affect your source video, images or audio clips.
What you see on the timeline are 'reference objects' to your video, image or audio clips, similarly the project file does not contain any of your source video, images or audio, it contains the references and associated data of what is to be done to the video.image/audio eg where the start/end points are what effects are applied etc.
These instructions are followed when you playback the timeline or render the project.

Subsequent adjustments can be done on the objects on the timeline.
John CB has created some tutorials on editing here and here although they refer to Movie Edit Pro (MEP), Video Pro X (VPX) is its big brother and the same techniques are used.
Thanks for this advice. It answers my enquiry exactly. Although I was aware that my original files were not affected I just couldn't see how to carry out multiple edits on a clip without affecting the clip as I had been able to do with other software. As I am finding increasingly with all aspects of Video Pro X the implementation is very neat and effective. Feel I should have found the video you referred me to myself, but seem to have looked at quite a few without finding it. Also didn't find reference to the method in the manual. No doubt this was down to me not posing the right questions / references.
I would also like to add how impressed I am with the speed and quality of support from yourself and in turn the Magix Support system. The help is very much appreciated.
Many thanks for the help given. Also thanks John EB - my apologies for confusing you with the Magix Support Team - I misunderstood the email notification of the new forum entries and connected you with the support team from that. In which case, all the more thanks for your help.
