.MVD Problem

Turkana wrote on 2/16/2026, 10:13 AM

Hello, Dear Forum Members,
I'd like to divide a large project, Project.MVP, into several pieces: part_1.MVD, part_2.MVD,... and work on each part carefully before putting it back together. 1) How do I divide (or maybe that doesn't make sense?) my Project.MVP? 2) How do I put it back together? I'm working with MAGIX Movie Edit Pro Premium Version 21.0.2.138. I tried to communicate with the AI, but it confused .MVD files with .mxv files, so I deleted the chat.

@Turkana

Hi

If you final 'product' is creating a DVD/BD disc, and you want each 'Part' to be individually playable, with or without Chapters, see this tutorial.

If you are wanting to create a new video file or files

Once you have all the individual parts worked up, see note below use the Merge movies option to merge them back together.

Notes:

Reduction in performance of Movie Studio, eg lagging/slowing down, if this becomes a problem:

  1. Save each timeline as an individual .MVD file - File, Manage project, Export Movie file, Magix movie file (*.MVD)

  2. For each .MVD file, start a new project (empty) project and import it to work on. File, Manage project, Import Movie file, Magix movie file (*.MVD)

  3. Work up each movie as required, saving the projects.

  4. Start a new project and add the above saved projects in order File, Open, Open an existing project selecting the 'add to current project' option.

  5. Merge the movies as shown above.

Tips:

  1. Keep track of every step of the process, with comprehensive notes on which project/timeline is current, needs extra work etc etc.

  2. Keep saving backups of each project adding a version number to the project filename. You will end up with a lot of project files. For a project I did late 2025, 15 separate movie parts ended with ~ 100 backup project files, kept in a separte folder from the 'work in progress' files.

@Turkana

I'd use that "Merge Movies" option with caution; it will delete the movie you are merging into the target movie and "Undo" will not retrieve it.

I would be inclined to simply use one project, with multiple movies/timelines in that project (a tab for each movie across the top of the timeline area).

You can work on each movie, on it's own timeline, independently. Just make sure the movie properties are the same for each.

When the time comes to join them all up, you can simply copy and paste the objects from each movie into the "combo" movie. That said, you can batch-export each movie into a separate file, which I find makes cataloguing and watching the content easier. Having a more shorter videos allows more descriptive filenames and it's easier to view, instead of trying to trawl through one monster file.

And as John says, if you're making a DVD, using multiple movies is the way to go.

I've got a Youtube video on the Movie/Project subject .
