MVP vs MVD

me_again wrote on 12/19/2020, 12:58 AM

Greetings,

This morning I've noticed that new projects I've started seem to be being saved as either MVD or MVP. The projects are all new, that is they are not extracted from previous projects, but the video source is, in some cases, getting on a bit.

Most projects seem to be saved as MVP's and I know that I can save a project as an MVD from File / Manage Movies but I don't - not deliberately anyway..

It's only curiosity that I ask "what is the difference between the 2 extensions" as they both work without a problem.

Hi Andy

Interesting - I have just checked projects I have created over the last few days and they are MVP only. To get MVD files the project has to be saved using File, Manage project, Export movie

MVP vs MVD

AFAICS the differences are:

MVP contains the project settings and a few program settings as well as all the movie data - whats on the timeline, effects etc.

MVD only contains the movie data - whats on the timeline, effects etc.

Hi,

Another minor precision, the MVD file contains only one movie, whereas the MVP file can contain multiple movies.

I sometimes start multiple movie projects that get too big, so I export one or more movies and open them in a new project, then delete them from the first project, usually forgetting to also delete the MVD file once imported into a new project. With many multiple movies, every time there is an automatic save, MEP makes multiple passes as it saves each movie to the MVP file. VPX adds saving the Project Temp Folder to the process. Even though this only takes several seconds, it can become annoying every ten minutes.

Greetings John & John,

Thanks you for your replies, I think they've helped me to track down the cause.

I was just looking at todays project and right clicked one of the movies to rename it, and noticed that at the bottom of the menu there is the option to export movie, which is indeed an MVD file.

I can only think that I must have clicked on Export movie instead of Rename movie and pressed return to come out of it in a fit of panic - twice.

That certainly explains it in my mind.Time for a cup of tea and a lie down.
