My digitalr recording of a conference is too faint and has some background noise. How can I improve it?

I use a good digital recorder (Sony ICD-TX50) but at times my end product is hard to listen to. The voice of the speaker is not loud enough and there might be some background noises I would love to get rid of.

When I try to increase the volume with Magix Music Editor 3, I usually end up with the background noise drowning the voice.

What can I do to improve the level and the quality of the recorded voice? Thanks a million.

Suggest to the attendees that one person speaks at a time, and that person needs to speak up !  Other than that, you can try to do some filtering.  This may take some time and trial and error because basically you just have one master track to work with, but doable.  I like my first suggestion better
