My Last Word on "Takes".

Richard-Curtis wrote on 5/20/2021, 9:36 AM

"Thank goodness," I can hear some of you saying. BUT, I think the issue is resolved, at least to my satisfaction (and I'm not convinced anyone else uses Takes, anyway). Takes do work in MEP2021 and probably by extension in MEP2020, too - but the Edit menu item "Save Objects as Takes", which I've always employed up to now, results in only the video component of the clip being saved. The slightly more laborious method of saving Takes by dragging clips from the timeline to the media pool saves the full clip, audio and all. The "Save Objects as Takes" item in the Edit menu is fully functional in MEP2019 and possibly earlier versions also.

That's the last comment I'm going to make on this subject, honestly.

I would not bet on that 😁!

Did you file a bug report with the above information?

Hereunder my bug report and Magix response:

Bug Report: MEP 2020/2021"Takes" Issue.

Please be advised that there is a problem in saving Takes (TK2 files) in MEP 2020
and MEP 2021. The Edit menu item "Save Objects as Takes" does not save the audio
component of the clips to be saved; in order to save the clips complete with audio
it is necessary to drag them from the timeline to the media pool. This problem
does not exist in MEP 2019.
Kindly note that you were advised by a MEP forum member in September 2019 that
there was an issue with "Takes" in MEP 2020. This bug was not fixed at the time,
and has now, sadly, been carried over to MEP2021.

Thank you for your message. I remember that there was a bug with these takes. So the problem is already known and has been reported. Apparently the priority of this bug isn't high so I will raise this problem again in the next meeting. Thank you for this hint.

I will simply say that I find this response quite extraordinary.

Hi Richard.

Sadly I don't.

After looking at another problem on another thread I realised there is another bug, or at least lack of support for a feature that once once worked that has not since been reported and that is the ability to render an export to the mov file format within MEP 2021.It is clearly missing even though the ability is mentioned on the current MEP2021 specs page.

The ability is still in VPX 11 but not having VPX 12 I can't verify if exporting mov has disappeared from the new version of that or not.

And to test that it works in VPX 11 I imported a mov file that does not show properly within Windows Explorer since one of Windows updates seems to have disrupted that ability but nonetheless loaded within VPX 11 and exported to a mov file that Windows ten Explorer and Film and TV can display and use.

now after conversion.

mov files prior that could not be read or played by Windows.

I did on the other thread ask if anyone could verify if VPX 12 could still do this or whether it had disappeared from the most recent version as well. So far no-one has got back to me.

I find that disturbing because we have also lost what seems to be the ability to use variable frame rate files as well that MEP seemed to be able to cope with in earlier versions but no more. How good that ability was I can't comment as it seems it was before my time of use of the program and I've never really had use for that ability anyway.

If ability of a particular aspect of a program is going to be dropped or no longer supported it would be nice to at least be informed. If instead it is a previously unknown or unreported bug it would also be nice to know if Magix felt it could or should be fixed.

Ray.

Hi John.

I did miss that one reply from you, and forgot I had previously raised the subject, sorry.

However why does the current specs page for MEP then have mov listed as an export format when it is clearly missing in the export list?

VPX does list the export as missing, I just checked so clearly the MEP specs are wrong, assuming VPX remains the premier version of the two programs. Also why is it now missing when it seems not to clearly be just a Windows problem?

Obviously my last question is rhetorical but possibly needs to be brought to the attention of Magix.

What I am afraid of is all of my much earlier mov files (pre 2009 and taken with Fuji cameras) will eventually be unreadable within Windows for any further editing or archiving.

Ray.

I was in a similar situation several years ago with a very large number of different background effects/video loops in MOV format that I had - I batch converted them to MP4 h.264/AVC avoid the issue.
