Is it possible to rename video tracks? I'm doing a video of a choir in isolation and want the people's names on the left hand side on the track view to identify who they are! How can I do that?
That's very useful and something I hadn't chanced upon.
I had previously been renaming clips in Windows only when I felt it may help if I needed to find an older clip for a new project. So like for stock footage use.
I do the same - name them so I can tell what they are without playing them, if they are original clips then I copy them first before renaming and putting into an organised Resources folder.
Sometimes mine get renamed when transferring from camera to pc but most of the time I create separate folders with copies of clips to rename. It depends on what I've gone out to shoot. Most of what I take is named to dates and places. I do sometimes forget I have certain files but have never really lost any so far and can find them quite easily if I'm not completely sure where they are.
I have never gone to the lengths of trying to do a data base although I could see advantages in doing that as well.
Further to what Ray showed, you have to increase the height of the tracks to be able to see the names box. As well as naming tracks, you can give them separate colours. Note that the track name gets highlighted when you mouse-over it.
Since you have VPX, you have the Project Temp Folder (PTF) that you can use for renaming clips. You can import the clips directly into the PTF, in either the root or a subfolder, without putting them on the timeline, and rename them there, give a Description, Scene and Take (on video clips, not photos). Then, you can add them to the timeline from the PTF. If you split a clip, you can put each part into the PTF and change the names as you wish. You can find the associated clips on the timeline by right-clicking on the clip in the PTF and choosing one of the two "Select associated...." commands, depending on the case. The PTF effectively becomes your database. The red indicator light is on if the clip in the PTF is on the timeline.
I have templates with some files in the PTF, but nothing on the timeline. For example, I have the arrow that I use in my tutorials. It's been resized, added to the PTF, and given the name Arrow25 (zoom factor is 25). I also have my ending music. Nothing is on the timeline in the template. There is much more, like exporting/importing the PTF. I must do a tutorial on this.
Having VPX would be helpful for Davy as he could just import the photos of the people into the PTF, rename them and use them from there, no need to put them on separate tracks. Unused images won't have the red light on them. To find a photo in the Movie, right-click on the entry in the PTF and choose "Select associated source material in movie."
That seems a good use for the PTF which until now I had mainly ignored as superfluous due to the clips being used showing with the red square block in the import section.
When objects are put directly into the PTF from the Media Pool Import, the red light is turned on in the Media Pool but not in the PTF. This way, you know what has been imported into the Project by looking at the Media Pool, and what has been imported onto the timeline by looking at the PTF. If you import directly to the timeline from the Media Pool, object is simultaneously put into the PTF and the red light is on.
Below is the above project but with a template PTF file imported:
