Currently using the 2013 prem trial, and noticed that the 2013 version came out last fall. What month would the next version most likely to be expected?
Historically, do they offer early adopter or upgrade discounts on the new versions?
MEP 2013 came out (I think in September or October of 2012). I did receive email upgrade offers at a pretty good price, but because the new features that came with the new version did not have a big impact on the type of videos I make (I don't shoot AVCHD) I did not upgrade to the new product. I would however pick the premium version of any Magix program that I purchase. The value for the premium product versus the basic or plus versions for me have been significant.
The version I have (Movie Edit Pro 18 MX Premium) was reviewed by PC Pro in November 2011, Movie Edit Pro 17 was reviewed by Software Crew in September 2010, so from that I would conclude that Magix is probably on an annual new version cycle for the software.
I got MEP 2013 around mid September 2012. As to version choice, I agree completely with George to avoid the standard one. The 'Plus' usually has definitely valuable program enhancements (multi-cam, 5.1 sound, menu design etc) while the 'Premium' usually come with add-on third part software which may or may not be or interest to you.
If you need it, buy now? Do you think that 2013 and 2014 are so different, probably the only add on must be 2K and 4K video camera or export to all social network like YouTube, Vimeo, Face Book, Twitter, Daily Motion and more this change nothing because open YT and upload video or make it directly from software change nothing. Video software’s have reached the top for many users.
Probably addition for Windows 8 and the touch screen, are you concerned? Nobody want to change his screen and pay 1000$ for a new one.
My thoughts on buying now versus buyin later are: If it were me I would wait for the new version. Why, because in order to stay competitive with the other top 4 companies, Magix needs to add features, third party applications or both as part of the package for the premium version. They also could not realistiaclly charge $1000 or anything even close because the other top 4 companies are priced right around Cyberlink, Corel, and Adobe are priced right around the $100 mark for their "Premium" versions. The current price of $129.99 is already a premium over the other three. It would be business suicide (at least in North America) to try to price significanly higher than the other 3 because Magix consistenly ranks Number 4 on the TopTen Reviews site.
I own or have used the other 3 and I still prefer the MEP workflow approach, but I still need to own a second editing application to deliver the effects, titles, and travel animation that I want. I usually update/buy new software every second version from my current one depending on features, and 3rd party applications that will improve my video quality and reduce the time it takes to create videos for my clients.
I share that Gandjcarr wrote but summer time is full occasion to shot video as example: wedding, beach, travel vacation and naturally outside family party. Depending the country summer offers much more possibility video than winter. For the most users Magix, Pinnacle, Adobe, Corel, Cyberlink cannot offer much more function in future version. Most consumers shot DVD and own camera like entry level to video, some use DSLR and has only one objective to show on the web or on the player in family. When you shot a video everybody want to view it, not after 3 months.
