No video in editing monitor

Hi Joey and welcome to the user o user forums.

It sounds like your files are recorded using an H265 (HEVC) codec.

Can you play the files in Windows Film and TV or do you have to use a third party video player?

Can you see thumbnails in Windows explorer when you open up the containing folder?

If you can't see either then it sounds like you need to purchase the Windows HEVC codec from the Windows store or convert them to MP4 with Handbrake.

There may be additional editing problems associated with such files later on such as sound going out of sync or video frame 'micro jumps' depending on whether the HEVC files are also recorded using a variable frame rate.

These files normally seem to come from either newer Go-Pro cameras, newer smart phones or screen recorders.

One other option if you have it is to record directly to MP4 rather than using HEVC.

Could be wrong here, but VLC media player can play HEVC, so wouldn't that codec be available for MEP to use.

Hi Robert.

No it's not, hence my comment about not using third party video playback programs. VLC and similar players are self contained and do not share codecs with Windows or other third party software.

Had to check my PC to find out what codec I am using, it appears that I have installed HEVC Video Extensions from Device Manufacturer which is a free download, updated 1/5/2021

Hi Robert.

An awful lot of what can be done within Windows or some other operating systems comes down to if you happen to have supplied codecs, or sometimes drivers, either from the manufacturer of the newly introduced equipment / program,or can be obtained from a third party licensed product. The amount of variation seems to increase with each passing month and the ability to keep pace or know what to do about a specific problem when it arises becomes more and more difficult and sometimes with no real solution immediately to hand or for some considerable time after a new version of a format is implemented.

People should first research any new item they wish to introduce into their systems processing chain before they proceed. Especially with new hardware such as cameras or smart phones or they could find such purchases then require either new software or completely new systems to then use them effectively. The same is also true of new programs that are designed to use the newest computing hardware to keep up with increased processing demands of such newer ancillary equipment.

Thanks for the feedback on my question. I realize I forgot to mention that these files are from a Canon Vixia camcorder and will play in any video player and I have previously been using them in Movie Edit Pro 2016 without a problem. They are MP4 files 1280 x 720

I wonder whether this is another example of what I would term the "Mysterious Quicktime Problem", though it seems you do not see an error message suggesting that QT needs to be installed on your computer.

Can you please download and install the free MediaInfo Utility, point it to one of your video files which plays in MEP 2021 as audio only, and paste here the results of the Text View (found under the Options menu tab).

If the camera is one of these then there doesn't seem to be anything unusual about the files.
