no video issue importing 4k hdr MKV file vpx12

remco-L wrote on 3/24/2022, 5:50 PM

i have an issue when importing a large ~110GB MKV file (details below), where in both the preview and timeline there will be no video, whils the audio is fine. after several tries to fix this, i tried it again with a simmilar, and much smaller version (~15GB)of the (should be) same video, and that worked fine, though the video lost all its saturation/became washed out.

i then tried to find out what the difference was between the two, as they should be just more compressed versions of eachother, but i can't find the reason why one would work and the other not.

i could use the smaller file, but i want to work with the bigger file, for less quality loss this early in the project. so if possible i would like advice on how to solve the following 2 issues:

- how to make sure i can work with the large file (either changing settings in magix or through conversion of the file), to make it show video again

-how to make the video of the smaller file (And possibly the larger one after fixing the black screen issue) show more colour.

here are some stats that are probably needed to fix this:

magix video pro x12 version: 18.0.1.95 (UDP3)

pc specs: (probably underpowered) win 10 home Asus Vivobook X512FL laptop with: Intel i7-8565 1.80GHz, integrated GPU intel UHD 620 and dedicated Nvidia Geforce mx250, 16GB ram, plenty of remaining space on M.2 NVME SSD

below/attached is the mediainfo of the two mentioned video files. the large one on the left has the issue with the black/empy/blank screen, and the right has the lacking washed out colours. the only notable difference between the two i could find was in the HEVC format profile (Main 10@L5.1@), where the large file ends in 'High', whereas the smaller one ends with 'Main'.

in case image is too small: https://imgur.com/a/9zeDhzB

i would be very grateful for nay help, and in case i need to share more info, please ask. also, i am not in the position to easily upgrade my laptop, so if it is a hardware issue, i'll just have to make the smaller file make do.

Hi and welcome to the user to user forums.

Generally speaking, the higher end the nvidia graphics card, the smoother the playback and the more data can be quickly transferred from the file, decoded, and played back. The problem is the codec in use. HEVC (H265) is a very efficient but highly compressed video format that needs a lot of processing power to decode for playback. The higher quality file has ten times more data to deal with in real time than the lower quality one. My nvidia GTX 1650 Super would struggle with that file for playback and is rated 184% more powerful than your nvidia mx250.

While your card could produce such a file(all be it quite slowly) playback of such files is another workload altogether.

Had the file used MP-4 (H264) (Not available if you are working with HRD content) the compression may have been a lot less and easier to cope with but the file could have been at least twice the file size. I'm not even sure an nvidia GTX 1060 card would suffice. I think you would be looking at an nvidia RTX 2080 minimum for this.

Ray.

Hi

For the decoding , and encoding, the laptop will be relying entirely on the Intel UHD 620, if it is enabled, which can be used for Hardware Acceleration (HWA) for decoding and encoding both h.264/AVC and h.265/HEVC.

The Nvidia MX250 does not support either the h.264/AVC or h.265/HEVC for HWA of decoding or encoding, in this laptop I believe it is used just for driving the display.

In the program settings of VPX 12 What option is selected for the Display options, Video mode section. In the lower option you may see 3 or 4 differnt options - if avaialble and not already set, set to the UHD 620.

If the UHD 620 is not available, check in the laptop BIOS to see if it can be enabled - where the setting is depends on the BIOS used.

Also check that the UHD 620 drivers are up to date.

Hi John.

Then how come the smaller MKV file can be played?

Hi Ray

Without knowing the settings or details for:

  • the video mode
  • if the iGPU is available
  • the iGPU drivers are up to date

I would be guessing.

Bearing in mind that the 115GB video file is 4K UHD, HEVC encoded, and 71.5Mb/s bitrate, it would be fair to say the iGPU is availability with up to date drivers requires fixing/confirming first.

@CubeAce , @johnebaker ,

i have checked that the drivers are up-to-date, and enabled hardware acceleration. i also used MKVToolNix to break up the 110GB into chapters of 0.6-6GB, to make testing easier. it now seems to load faster, but it is still a black screen. https://we.tl/t-PKo9AOgTKt (link to the 0.6GB chapter if you want to test it on your system, to see if it is the file or just my pc)

what intrigues me is that before i used VPX12, i used shotcut (free, open source video editor), which had no problems with the 110GB video file, and could actually handle it easier that vpx12 does, and without making proxies(which takes hours (maybe due to hwa being off). the main issue i had with it however was that it could not reverse footage, which is why i stopped my editing (Fairly early on luckily). then i found VPX12 on a deal at humble and decided to give it another try, only to run into more problems here.

if it can't be fixed by software adjustments, ill just use shotcut for the main edit, and export small files in mp4 format that need aditional editing in vpx12, and then put them back. i was however hoping i could switch to vpx, with it being a professional and paid program and all.

Hi.

The file plays back just fine in Windows Film and TV. It imports quickly into VPX 12 and the sound channels can be separated and and mixed but as you say, there is no image.

Hi

The issue would appear to be the encoding codec, converting the video to 4K h.265 (HEVC) 10 bit using Handbrake imports correctly in VPX 12, though you do lose the subtitle stream.
